Biography: Adiel G. Smith, M.D. received his undergraduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he majored in Mechanical Engineering with a specialty in medical device design. He then worked for four years at Johnson & Johnson, designing and helping to manufacture the first-ever drug-eluting cardiac stent. This experience motivated Dr. Smith to pursue a medical career. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Miami. Throughout his time in medical school, Dr. Smith performed research at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.After graduating from medical school, Dr. Smith completed his ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospitalthe oldest eye hospital in America and the number 1 ranked residency program in the country. After residency, he entered a two-year fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery and diseases of the Retina and Macula at the Cole Eye Institute of the Cleveland Clinic, in Cleveland, Ohio.Dr. Smith has authored numerous scientific peer-reviewed publications and has presented his research at both local and national ophthalmology meetings. He has served as a sub-investigator for over a dozen clinical trialsmany in the area of macular degeneration, diabetes, and state-of-the-art imaging technology. Dr. Smith is a board-certified diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Florida Society of Ophthalmology. He specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, ocular inflammation and infections, macular holes, macular puckers, and retinal detachments. ?After three years with a large multispecialty ophthalmology group in Palm Beach County, Dr. Smith opened up the South Florida Retina Institute in the heart of Aventura, Florida. Focused on providing state-of-the-art retina care, this new office is dedicated to providing compassionate, thoughtful and meticulous care to patients with retinal and ophthalmic diseases. The office has the newest in imaging modalities including ultra-widefield fundus imaging, ultra-widefield OCT and OCT angiography, has the latest lasers for the treatment of diabetes, retinal tears and detachments, macular edema and uveitis, and he utilizes the latest in intraocular medications.
