Biography: ABOUT DR. BERASTAIN Dr. Berastain Jr. was raised most of his life in the Corpus Christi area and attended Incarnate Word Academy High School. Subsequently, he attended The University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN and graduated cum laude. On graduation, he remained in the Midwest completed medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. He would go on to complete his Orthopaedic residency at The University of Texas at Houston, Department of Orthopaedics. He joined his father in practice in 2006 and remained in joint practice for 9 years. He learned a tremendous amount from Dr. Berastain Sr. and his years of experience. In February of 2014 he became affiliated with the Orthopaedic Center of Corpus Christi. Dr. Berastain Jr. works to develop a partnership with his patients by helping them make informed decisions about their health. He offers both non-operative and operative treatment options and he understands that listening and clear communications are essential for quality patient care. Honesty and transparency have worked in helping patients make the best decision for themselves. He has an interest in total hip replacement using the anterior approach, robotic and computer navigated knee replacement, and shoulder replacement. He performs knee arthroscopy including meniscus tears, ACL reconstruction and shoulder arthroscopy including rotator cuff repairs. Technology allows him to give the most precise surgical results with both computer navigation and robotic surgery. He also enjoys nonoperative and operative fracture care of the wrist, shoulder, hip, ankle. Dr. Berastain Jr. is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is a member of the Texas Orthopaedic Association, Texas Medical Association and the Nueces County Medical Society. He enjoys weightlifting, running, cycling, fishing, kayaking and spending time with his wife Nancy, their twins, and their dogs Chili and Bailey.

Biography: Jason Thompson, M.D. is Fellowship Trained in Adult Hip & Knee Reconstructive Surgery and Replacement. He completed training at the Orthopaedic Surgery Division Schulich School of Medicine, University of Western Ontario at London Health Sciences Centre in London, Ontario, Canada. His fellowship training included management of degenerative, rheumatoid, and post-traumatic arthritis of the hip and knee, a high volume of revision hip and knee arthroplasty, as well as exposure to non-arthroplasty alternatives of young adult hip disorders. The emphasis of the fellowship was on revision hip and knee arthroplasty. His orthopaedic research included long-term clinical outcome and database studies, initiation of randomized trials, use of advanced imaging modalities and implant retrieval studies. Dr. Thompson accomplished Orthopaedic Residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center of San Antonio. He also acquired his Medical Degree at The University of Texas Health Science Center of San Antonio, School of Medicine and his Bachelor of Science in General Studies, Magna Cum Laude at The University of Texas at Dallas in Richardson, Texas.His professional experience includes a four-year career as a professional soccer player - playing two years for FC Dallas and two years for DC United in Major League Soccer (MLS), winning the MLS Cup championship in 2004 with DC United. His experiences also include time as a Research Study and Regulatory Coordinator at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas as well as a Patient Care Technician at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Thompson was named, by his peers, a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and the Most Outstanding Resident Mentor in orthopaedic surgery. He was also a member of the U.S. under-23 Men's National Soccer Team and elected into the Eastern Illinois University (EIU) Sports Hall of Fame for his accomplishments with the EIU Men's Soccer Team. Dr. Thompson joins South Texas Bone and Joint to help expand our Orthopaedic and minimally invasive surgery services to the Coastal Bend and beyond. Biography: Nicholas E Gerken, MD is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon with Methodist Physicians | Orthopedic Specialists in San Antonio, Texas. He is fellowship trained in adult reconstruction and joint replacement, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of knee and hip pathology.
