Biography: Ralph Layman, MD, FACS, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeon with Richmond Surgical Associates and serves as the director of Trauma Surgery and Kidney Transplant at Henrico Doctors' Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Layman earned his medical degree at The University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. From there, Dr. Layman completed his internship and residency training in General Surgery at The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he served as chief resident his senior year and spent year as a research fellow in immunology. While in residency he also trained abroad, at the University of Limerick, completing a colorectal fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland. He then completed his abdominal organ transplant and hepatobiliary fellowship at The University of Pittsburgh's Starzl Transplant Institute. Biography: Richard G. Rento II, MD, grew up in northern New Jersey before receiving his Bachelor's degree from Brown University in 1982. He earned his medical degree in 1986 from the Brown-Dartmouth Program in Medicine (Hanover, NH and Providence, RI). Dr. Rento did his general surgery and urology training at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, at the McGaw Medical Center where, in addition to his clinical training, he spent a year as a research fellow in 1991 and was Chief Resident in 1992. For the past 25 years, Dr. Rento has been in private practice in southeastern Virginia where he served as Medical Director of Urologic Oncology at Riverside Cancer Care Center. Consistently, for the past fifteen years, including 2017, he has been listed as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in Hampton Roads. In 2013, he was on the cover of Hampton Roads Magazine and voted the ``Top Urologist`` by his peers. Biography: Amanda Bailey, DO, FACS, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeon with Richmond Surgical Associates in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Bailey earned her medical degree at Nova Southeastern University of College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and completed her residency training in general surgery with West Virginia University where she served as chief resident. Following her residency, she completed a fellowship in multi-organ transplant with University of Cincinnati. She was an assistant professor of Transplant Surgery at University of Cincinnati performing liver, kidney and pancreas transplants. She also received her Master of Science in Medical Technology from University of South Florida. Dr. Bailey is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgery. She is affiliated with Henrico Doctors' Hospital. She has more than a decade of experience and has been honored with many awards related to her practice. She specializes in transplant surgery for deceased and living donor kidney transplants, living donor nephrectomy, and multi-organ procurements. She trained alongside transplant nephrologists and pharmacy experts to gain specialized expertise to care for transplant patients. Dr. Bailey also serves on the Operations and Safety Committee with the Organ Procurement & Transplantation Network (OPTN) which advocates to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of organ donation and transplantation. Clifford Smith, MD, FACS, received his undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Smith completed his Surgical Internship and Surgical Residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, respectively. After serving for several years in the United States Navy, he completed his Fellowship in Minimally-Invasive Surgery at Greenville Hospital University of South Carolina in Greenville, South Carolina.Dr. Smith brings more than 12 years of surgical experience to Richmond Surgical. He served as the Department Head of General Surgery at Naval Hospital Okinawa in Japan, was deployed to Iraq from October of 2005 to March of 2006 when he was stationed at Naval Hospital Pensacola in Florida, was the Director of Surgical Services at Naval Hospital Sigonella in Italy, was the General Surgeon at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, and finally served as a General Surgeon at Naval Hospital Portsmouth, in Virginia, during which time he was deployed to Afghanistan from February to September of 2013. He recently retired from the United States Navy after 21 years of service.Dr. Smith is board-certified in General Surgery, is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the American Hernia Society, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
