Biography: Makram Gedeon, MD, is a double board-certified bariatric and colorectal surgeon specialized in minimally-invasive approaches to colorectal and bariatric surgery. Dr. Gedeon is part of both the Colorectal Surgery team at several locations throughout New York and New Jersey and the Center for Advanced Surgery at Lawrence Hospital and Hudson Valley. Dr. Gedeon received his medical degree from the American University of Beirut in 2002 before completing an internship in surgery at the Mayo Clinic and a general surgery residency at the University of Texas Southwestern. He has undergone two fellowships - one in minimally-invasive surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern and another in colon and rectal surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian. Following his residency training, Dr. Gedeon spent ten years in a busy community hospital practice in Bristol, Connecticut, where he helped start and grow the practice's weight loss surgery program and served as its medical director until the end of 2018. Biography: Dr. William Middlesworth joined the medical staff of Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia (MSCHONY), Division of Pediatric Surgery in 1997. He currently serves as director of the Pediatric ECMO Program, and Residency Program Director of the Pediatric Surgical Fellowship. Dr. Middlesworth has founded and leads the Pediatric Thyroid Center and the REACH (Researching Esophageal Atresia for Children's Health) Clinic. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Dr. Middlesworth spent two years in the Genetics Department at the Boston Children's Hospital on work leading to the identification and characterization of the dystrophin gene, important in the pathophysiology of muscular dystrophy. He went on to medical school at Rutgers University, and completed his general surgery training at the University of Maryland Medical System. During residency he spent a year as a surgical research fellow at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. His pediatric surgery fellowship was completed at MSCHONY. In addition to the responsibilities listed above, Dr. Middlesworth serves on numerous hospital and university committees focused on Quality and Patient Safety, and is the Quality Chair for Columbia Department of Surgery. He is the Surgeon Champion at the Columbia campus for the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project (NSQIP) of the American College of Surgeons. He chairs a multi-institution collaborative to reduce harm and enhance safety in the peri-operative setting that is sponsored by MCIC Vermont, the member-owned malpractice insurance carrier for Columbia, Cornell, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Johns Hopkins Medicine, University of Rochester Medicine and Yale. Dr. Middlesworth is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a member of numerous professional organizations dedicated to advancing the surgical care of infants and children, including the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA), the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma(EAST) and the Extra-corporeal Life Support Organization(ELSO), among others. Biography: Dr. Usama Ahmed Ali is a colorectal surgeon who has expertise in the whole gamut of colorectal surgery, including minimally invasive and open colorectal surgical procedures, anorectal operations, and colonoscopy. He completed his medical training at Utrecht University in the Netherlands in 2007. He then did colorectal research as a PhD researcher and was a colorectal research fellow at the Cleveland Clinic in 2011 under the guidance of Dr. Pokala Ravi Kiran. He trained in general and colorectal surgery at the University Medical Center Utrecht and the St. Antonius Hospital in The Netherlands after which he worked as a general and colorectal surgeon in Riverieland Ziekenhuis in Tiel until 2022. Dr. Ahmed Ali has an interest in a wide spectrum of colorectal conditions including benign colorectal conditions, diverticular disease, colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, polyposis and anorectal disorders such as hemorrhoids, abscesses and anal fistulas. Dr. Ahmed Ali trained extensively with Dr. Kiran and Dr. James Church. He works collaboratively with Dr. Church on complex fistula disease within the Anal Fistula Center and is part of the Hereditary Cancer and Familial Polyposis Center. He also works closely with Dr. Kiran in the management of various conditions including complex and reoperative colorectal surgery. He sees patients at both the Manhattan Upper East Side Campus as well as at NYP Brooklyn Campus. Administratively, Dr. Berman is the Associate Director for Clinical Education and the Associate Director for Surgical Oncology Network Integration for the Weill Cornell Medicine Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center. A graduate of NYU Grossman School of Medicine, he performed his surgical training at NYU and Bellevue Hospitals. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a Surgical Oncology Fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he also dedicated research time to investigating programmed cell death resistance during cancer progression. After training, Dr. Berman was recruited back to NYU. At NYU Dr. Berman was a tenured Professor of Surgery and served as Vice Chair for Surgical Education and Faculty Affairs, Chief of Surgical Oncology, and the long-standing Director of the Surgery Residency Program. A recipient of numerous teaching and graduate medical education awards, Dr. Berman has now been recruited to WCM to continue his passion for patient care, medical education (for students, trainees, and practicing clinicians) and growing multidisciplinary oncologic care and research programs.Dr. Berman's passion for cancer care and education/training extends to the national and international levels as well. At the national level, Dr. Berman recently served as Chair of the Complex General Surgical Oncology Board of the American Board of Surgery, where he was also chaired the American Board of Surgery (ABS) Nominating Committee and Certifying Examination Committee. He also was elected as Recorder of the ABS Council, having served as a Director and Councilor of the American Board of Surgery.Presently, Dr. Berman is President Elect (2025) of the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), the largest international organization of surgeons focused on care of the cancer patient. At the SSO he has also been held the positions of Vice President, Executive Council Member, Training Committee Chair, and Chair of the Education Council. Internationally, Dr. Berman is currently serving as the President of the Global Forum on Cancer Surgeons where he has co-authored the standard international curriculum in surgical oncology clinical training and the curriculum for oncologic research training. These training guidelines are currently being utilized by numerous countries in South America, Asia, and Africa.In 2022 Dr. Berman was elected as a member of the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators, an honor bestowed upon a select group of surgeons internationally. From the research perspective, Dr. Berman focuses on melanoma and surgical education. In addition to both clinical and translational research studies in melanoma, he has been involved in an active collaboration that investigates the care of solid tumor at safety net hospitals. From the surgical education research perspective, Dr. Berman co-authored the Professionalism in Surgical Training curriculum that became the basis for the national standard.

Biography: Dr. Jarrod T. Bogue is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He serves as an assistant program director of the plastic surgery residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital Cornell-Columbia. Recognized as a Rising Star in the 2024 SuperDoctors New York listings, Dr. Bogue continues to make significant contributions to plastic surgery, dedicated to enhancing patient outcomes and fostering the growth of future surgical leaders. Biography: Carl L. Herndon, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee reconstruction. He is skilled in the operative and nonoperative treatment of hip and knee injuries, including minimally invasive total joint arthroplasty (including anterior approach hip replacement), advanced techniques like robotically assisted total knee replacement, and unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement, as well as the latest approaches to managing periprosthetic joint infection and treatment of periprosthetic fracture. He also provides advanced care for hip, knee, and femur fractures and nonsurgical management for pain and arthritis.
