Biography: Dr. Saluja graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wesleyan University in Connecticut in 1996 where he was the recipient of the Hawk Prize for Excellence in Molecular Biology. He received his MD degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He went on do to his Internal Medicine training at Columbia, serving as Chief Resident before completing additional training in Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology. He served as the Director of the Electrophysiology Laboratory at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital from 2012 until 2018 before returning to Columbia. Dr Saluja continues to be active in teaching, research, and clinical practice. He has was named Teacher of the Year four times, has been named a Top Doctor by Castle-Connolly and New Jersey Monthly, and has numerous research publications and presentations at national meetings. Dr Saluja is a full-time faculty member at Columbia and sees patients at the Herbert Irving Pavilion at the Washington Heights campus.

Biography: Daniel S. O'Connor, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, Co-director of the Center for CardioOncology, Cardiologist for the Aortic Program and Cardiac Intensivist at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. His areas of expertise include consultative cardiology, critical care cardiology, and non-invasive imaging. Dr. O'Connor is board certified in internal medicine and cardiology. Dr. O'Connor received his PhD studying vascular and cancer cell biology within the Department of Pharmacology at Yale University. He then received his MD degree at The State University of New York at Brooklyn Medical Center (SUNY Downstate). Dr. O'Connor was an Intern, Resident and Chief Resident at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. He then completed his training as a Fellow and Chief Fellow in cardiovascular medicine at Columbia University Medical Center.

Horn, M.D. is a graduate of Brown University, Mount Sinai Medical School where she also was a medical intern and resident. She completed cardiology at the Cedars Sinai/UCLA program and thereafter spent 2 years as a research fellow at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons understanding the beta adrenergic G protein complex in heart failure, the denervated heart and models of arrhythmias. She remained at Columbia University Medical Center in the Divisions of Circulatory Physiology and Cardiology Center for Advanced Cardiac Care where she was at various times, Director of the Circulatory Physiology fellowship program, Director of Clinical Services for Heart Failure, Associate Director of the combined Pediatric & Adult Pulmonary Hypertension Center and Director of the Pulmonary Vascular program of the Center for Advanced Cardiac Care. She also was the director of the High Risk Cardiac Obstetrical program. She received numerous awards as clinician educator, continues to participate in clinical research in the areas of cardiac and vascular remodeling in heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.The Heart Failure program provides management of advanced heart failure (both systolic and diastolic), congenital heart disease, perioperative management of conventional cardiac surgical patients (high risk patients and high risk valve surgery), and ventricular assist devices. The center also offers rare expertise in the management of pulmonary hypertension, including idiopathic pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary hypertension associated with diseases such as connective tissue disease, congenital heart disease as well as a huge number of patients who have it in association with left heart disease and others have it associated with lung disease, certain hematological diseases or liver disease. Pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure complicates the management of about 1/3 of the patients with heart failure. In many, right heart failure follows left heart failure but management of difficult "cases" may require a special expertise and understanding of the interdependence of the right and the left ventricles. If cases become complicated by secondary pulmonary hypertension or right heart failure, most of Dr. Horn's colleagues seek out the "right heart doctor," as she has sometimes been called or the combined left and right heart doc.The phenotype of heart failure has multiple etiologies, and not all heart failure behaves the same way. Because of the nuances and subtleties involved in advanced heart failure, she stresses the importance of the multidisciplinary, collaborative center. Moreover, Dr. Horn points to the center's expertise in identifying the appropriateness and the optimal timing of therapeutic interventions. "We have fantastic technologies and therapies available, but these may not be in every patient's best interest," she explains. "It is essential to understand when therapies will or will not work, and when one has to move beyond them, perhaps to mechanical assist devices or heart transplantation for heart failure and lung transplantation for pulmonary hypertension. If we wait too long, we may have missed the opportunity to treat a patient, but no one wants to resort to devices or transplantation before a patient absolutely needs it."Dr. Horn's clinical research interests have been in ventricular and vascular remodeling in pulmonary hypertension and heart failure. Specific areas have included RV imaging, pulmonary hypertension outcome studies, use of vasopressin in pulmonary hypertension, endothelial dysfunction in pulmonary hypertension, RV dysfunction in the perioperative patient population, complications of pulmonary hypertension therapy, and assessment of the non PAH pulmonary hypertension patient population. She has been actively involved in the care of patients with valvular heart disease and in particular comorbidities of ventricular dysfunction and/or pulmonary vascular disease. She has been actively involved in the care of patients needing ventricular assist device therapies as a bridging or destination device. Along with colleagues, she has authored papers in the field of newer therapies for pulmonary hypertension, epidemiological assessments of patients with pulmonary hypertension, genetics of pulmonary hypertension, and markers of vascular dysfunction. She has been involved in industry sponsored heart failure and pulmonary hypertension studies, industry sponsored investigator initiated studies and collaborative NIH studies in Heart Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension. She has also been the liaison to high risk cardiac OB programs for the care of the complicated cardiac OB patient.Research and invited lectures have been presented at major National and International meetings. She is a fellow of the International Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute, helping to establish ISLHT Pulmonary Hypertension Committee and has been the recipient of teaching awards at Columbia University. Dr. Horn has created a NY Pulmonary Hypertension consortium, a network of a dozen specialists from the tri-state area, to encourage ongoing collaborative studies in pulmonary hypertension.

CLINICAL WORKIn 1991, Dr. Sommer made significant contributions to the field by establishing the first comprehensive pediatric interventional catheterization laboratory in New York City. In 1999, he launched his own practice and redirected his focus towards the growing population of adult patients with congenital heart disease. Dr. Sommer's joined the faculty at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in 2005.Dr. Sommer has expertise in a diverse range of congenital and structural heart interventions. Dr. Sommer directs the Left Atrial Appendage Closure Team at Columbia, having participated in the PREVAIL Trial, the CAP2 registry, and the CHAMPION-AF Trials using the Watchman Device, as well as the Amulet Device Pivotal and Conformal Device Feasibility Trial. In addition to diagnostic catheterizations in complex congenital heart disease, he performs over 200 atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closures and over 100 left atrial appendage closures annually. He has decades of experience in closing patent ductus arteriosus and ventricular septal defects, as well as, stenting coarctation of the aorta. Currently, Dr. Sommer serves as the national cardiology principal investigator for the GORE RELIEF clinical study to evaluate patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure for migraine headache relief using a device called the GORE CARDIOFORM Septal Occlude.Dr. Sommer collaborates closely with his Pediatric Cardiology colleagues at Columbia performing transcatheter pulmonary valve replacements in the congenital population. Together, with Barbara Robbins, NP, he provides primary cardiac care to a population of more than 300 pediatric and adult patients with congenital heart disease. Biography: Christopher Irobunda, MD, is an Associate Professor at CUMC and an interventionalist. He is also Vice Chair of the Faculty Development focusing on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion within the Department of Medicine. He trained as a general and interventional cardiologist. Dr. Irobunda has been a full-time faculty since 2003. He obtained his MD/PhD in the Medical Scientist Training Program at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. His PhD was in Molecular Pharmacology, specifically on the cyclic Adenosine MonoPhosphate/beta-adrenergic signal transduction system. He subsequently completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at New York University Medical Center, followed by his General and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship here at Columbia University Medical Center. After completing his medical training and research study, he shifted his concentration to patient care and the education of aspiring young physicians. Dr. Irobunda is ardently dedicated to uncompromised patient care and teaching. His primary focus is individualized patient care and patient advocacy. Given his training as a medical scientist, it is hardly surprising that he is a keen diagnostician. He has a penchant for complex cardiac issues and other medical problems that can sometimes mask or aggravate the cardiac disease. His aptitude for unraveling these medical conundrums has led to medical diagnoses for patients who have come to him for second and even third opinions. However, above all else, his true genius is his ability to relate to his patients with intelligence, curiosity, patience, compassion, and humor. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 2006 and his fellowship in cardiology at North Shore University Hospital/LIJ Medical Center in 2009.Dr. Laighold joined the faculty in 2024 from Northwell Health where he had worked since 2009. He previously was the Director of Clinical Cardiology at Southside Hospital and the Director of Noninvasive Structural Heart Program at North Shore University Hospital.

Biography: Dr. Shmuel Chen is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He specializes in interventional cardiology including the treatment of coronary and structural heart disease.Dr. Chen received his medical degree from The Hebrew University School of Medicine (Jerusalem, Israel) as well as a PhD in Neurobiology from the Hebrew University School of Medicine. He completed his training in internal medicine and cardiology at the Hebrew University, Hadassah Medical Center (Jerusalem, Israel), where he also served as a Staff Cardiologist and a Lecturer in Cardiology. He subsequently moved to New York City and dedicated over 2 years to a prestigious research fellowship at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF). During this time, he worked towards designing and undertaking cutting-edge clinical trials and research in interventional cardiology. He has lead and extensively contributed to a number of projects and studies, exploring all aspects of cardiovascular and structural heart disease. These works have been published in leading medical journals in the field. After this focused research time, Dr. Chen joined The Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (New York, NY) for a two-year interventional cardiology fellowship program in July 2019. He gained specialty training in coronary interventions and strcutrual heart disease including aortic, mitral, tricuspid, paravalvular leak, patent foramen ovale (PFO), and left atrial appendage procedures. He joined the Weill Cornell Medical Center in September 2021 for another year of advanced structural heart training and served as an Instructor in Medicine.
