Care Philosophy: As a Physiatrist, I believe that the first step in treatment is to arrive at the correct diagnosis. Once an accurate diagnosis is established, we should proceed with the most conservative treatments. After a precise diagnosis has been made, physical therapy is utilized to treat the injury . If this fails, then non-addictive medications can be considered. If they fail, then injections may be performed. I see my job as being your health consultant.

Biography: Dr. Alex Jonathan Nelson was born and raised in northern Utah. After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Utah, he attended The Ohio State University College of Medicine.In addition to his medical doctorate, he also completed the requirements for a Master of Health Administration in the OSU College of Public Health after receiving a university graduate fellowship.He received multiple honors during his medical studies, including a Dean's Scholarship, Dean's Leadership Scholarship, the Samuel J. Roessler Memorial research scholarship, and the Department of Neurology outstanding performance award.During Dr. Nelson's clinical rotations, he became fascinated with the function and pathology of the nervous system, which drove his decision to pursue a residency in Neurology. After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Nelson did a preliminary medicine intern year at the University of Utah before moving to Minnesota for his Neurology residency at one of the most distinguished and respected programs in the world, Mayo Clinic. While learning the complexities of the diagnosis and management of disorders of the nervous system, Dr. Nelson became particularly interested in the painful manifestations of neurologic dysfunction, and turned this desire into a pursuance of a subspecialty in Pain Medicine.He went on to do fellowship training in Pain Medicine at one of the American Pain Society's clinic centers of excellence, the University of California - Davis Pain Center. In fellowship, Dr. Nelson was instructed in a multi-disciplinary approach to the management of chronic pain conditions. He became skilled in the full spectrum of interventional techniques, including fluoroscopically-guided procedures, ultrasound-guided procedures, and advanced techniques of spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation.Dr. Nelson is board certified in Neurology and Pain Management. He will be seeing patients with any type of chronic pain, but has particular clinical interest in the treatment of headaches and neuropathic pain conditions.

He presents multiple surgical and non-surgical approaches, recognizing that there are benefits and risks to each option. His goal is for every patient to develop trust in him as a surgeon and educator, and be comfortable with their own level of understanding of their condition and options. Dr. Vernon has worked hard to build a reputation of being a conservative surgeon, one who has good bedside manner, pays attention to details, and executes surgery safely by being meticulous and technically proficient in the operating room. For patients, this translates into good outcomes, including alleviation of pain and return to improved functioning. Overall, it makes him proud when patients are happy with their treatment. He is married with 2 children and 3 dogs. He enjoys mountain biking, skiing, and hiking in the wilderness. The teenager in him still likes fast cars with deep, growling engines. He is fluent in Spanish. He also enjoys being an entrepreneur, and has experience starting two successful businesses: Vernon Medical, and Precision Medical Imaging.
