Biography: Dr. Michael Martinez is a native of the Rio Grande Valley and a product of the Edinburg school system. After completing undergraduate studies at Princeton University with a degree in psychology and a focus on neuroscience, he went on to receive his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Martinez completed general surgery residency training at Scott and White Hospital in central Texas. He then pursued further specialty training in the area of advanced minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at the University of South Florida at Tampa General Hospital. Dr. Martinez is board certified by the American College of Surgeons. He is a fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons. Dr. Martinez is a full-time advance laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon. He is also part of the surgical faculty for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley surgical residency program. He has published research on topics of bariatric and laparoscopic surgery and has a special interest in the topic of super obesity (BMI 50) and associated comorbid conditions. Dr. Michael Martinez received the Young Physician of the Year Award by the National Hispanic Medical Association in 2018. The recognition is due to him keeping patients as the focus of his practice and helping the Hispanic community.
