Care Philosophy: Dr. Brian Vernon joins the Abrazo Spine Institute with over 10 years™ experience providing surgical excellence in degenerative spinal conditions, spine trauma, metastatic spinal lesions, motion preservation surgery (i.e. cervical and lumbar disc replacement), and minimally invasive spine surgery. Dr. Vernon approaches each patient as an individual, recognizing that each person, his or her circumstances, and their spine is unique. A treatment plan is formulated based on these factors. He presents multiple surgical and non-surgical approaches, recognizing that there are benefits and risks to each option. His goal is for every patient to develop trust in him as a surgeon and educator, and be comfortable with their own level of understanding of their condition and options. Dr. Vernon has worked hard to build a reputation of being a conservative surgeon, one who has good bedside manner, pays attention to details, and executes surgery safely by being meticulous and technically proficient in the operating room. For patients, this translates into good outcomes, including alleviation of pain and return to improved functioning. Overall, it makes him proud when patients are happy with their treatment. He is married with 2 children and 3 dogs. He enjoys mountain biking, skiing, and hiking in the wilderness. The teenager in him still likes fast cars with deep, growling engines. He is fluent in Spanish. He also enjoys being an entrepreneur, and has experience starting two successful businesses: Vernon Medical, and Precision Medical Imaging.

Biography: Dr. Hills is an interventional pain management specialist who uses a comprehensive approach to relieve suffering and improve quality of life. He was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. During his undergraduate at Utah State University, he met and married his wife Kristen, and later graduated with a degree in exercise and sport science from the University of Utah.He completed a Masters degree in Biomedical Science at Midwestern University in Glendale Arizona and went on to attend medical school at A.T. Still University in Kirksville Missouri. He completed a Transitional Year Internship at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital and his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UT Southwestern in Dallas Texas. While there, he received the Arete award for altruism in 2017, the Senior Resident of the Year award in 2018, and served as the academic chief resident.He then completed a pain medicine fellowship at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento California. During his training, he was actively involved in the community and with research and remains affiliated with UC Davis co-authoring a book on implantation techniques for spinal cord stimulation. Biography: Dr. Hammond is a Utah native, graduating from BYU in 1996. He moved to California to complete medical school at Western University of Health Sciences, graduating in 2001. He completed his internship in internal medicine in Connecticut. He then completed his neurology residency at Northwestern University in Chicago, and followed with specialized training in sleep medicine with a fellowship at the same university. His professional interests include sleep disorders, multiple sclerosis, peripheral nerve and muscle diseases, and stroke. Dr. Hammond returned to Utah in 2006 for all that it offers: family, lifestyle, and the best backcountry in the world.
