Patterson, MD, is an Orthopedic Surgeon with LewisGale Physicians who has served the Southwest Virginia community for over ten years. Dr. Patterson graduated with honors from the Georgia Institute of Technology earning a bachelor of science in Microbiology and a certificate in Industrial Psychology. Following his undergraduate work, he earned his medical doctorate at the Medical College of Georgia, in Augusta. He completed two residencies, the first in internal medicine at University of South Carolina and the second in orthopedic surgery at University of Florida-Shands, Jacksonville. Dr. Patterson also achieved a fellowship in orthopedic adult reconstruction at OrthoCarolina, in Charlotte. Dr. Patterson is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). He has more than 16 years of experience in all areas of Orthopedics, specializing in hip and knee reconstructions, both primary and revision. Dr. Patterson has a passion for teaching and has taught students, residents and fellows. He also participates on the Christian Education Committee at his church.In addition to his established patients, Dr. Patterson has offered his medical expertise on several international missions including Peru, Venezuela, Zambia, and Haiti. When not treating patients, Dr. Patterson enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, as well as fishing, running, and coaching little league soccer. Dr. Patterson is currently welcoming new orthopedic patients and referrals.

Biography: Dennis Chen, MD, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon with LewisGale Physicians in Salem, Virginia. He has a history of academic excellence, graduating with honors from the highly competitive combined undergraduate and medical degree program at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Chen subsequently completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Virginia followed by a fellowship in adult joint reconstruction surgery at the University of Florida.Dr. Chen specializes in minimally invasive, muscle-sparing hip and knee replacement surgery, including robotic total and partial knee replacement, direct anterior hip replacement, and revision hip and knee replacement. He utilizes the latest technology and techniques to tailor the surgery and implants to each patient, helping patients get back to doing the things they love as soon as possible.Dr. Chen has an extensive research background with numerous publications, book chapters, and presentations at national meetings. This includes several articles in the Journal of Arthroplasty and the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons looking at outcome optimization and other relevant issues in joint replacement surgery.When not seeing patients, Dr. Chen enjoys spending time outdoors with his family and golden retriever.
