Care Philosophy: Dr. Kevin Varner, chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at Houston Methodist Hospital, specializes in foot and ankle disorders. Specific areas of interest include tibia fractures and sports related injuries of the foot and ankle. He serves as the head team physician for the Houston Ballet and is the assistant team orthopedic surgeon for the Houston Texans, the Houston Dynamo and the University of Houston. He is also a member of the Houston Methodist Center for Performing Arts Medicine. Dr. Varner completed his foot and ankle fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Biography: Tomiko Fukuda, M.D. is an orthopedic surgeon specializing and foot and ankle surgery. Originally from the Midwest, Dr. Fukuda graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She worked in Wisconsin for International Paper as a Chemical Engineer for 3 years before changing her path to medicine. She received her Medical Doctorate from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dr. Fukuda went on to complete her Surgical Internship and her Orthopedic Surgery Residency at McGaw Medical Center at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. She completed a Fellowship Training Program in Foot and Ankle Surgery at the Foundation for Orthopaedic, Athletic, and Reconstructive Research in Houston, Texas.Dr. Fukuda has many honors and awards to her credit, including the Walter P. Blount Award for Orthopedics, given by the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She received the Janet M. Glascow Memorial Citizen for Scholastic Achievement Award by the American Medical Women's Association, and is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor's Society. Biography: I am a partner in the Fondren Orthopaedic Group. I am a board certified orthopaedic surgeon dedicated to providing exceptional orthopaedic foot and ankle care in the Houston area for the past 15 years. My orthopedic practice specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle problems. In preparation for this I have completed a 5 year orthopedic residency and additional year in foot and ankle fellowship training. This provided the opportunity for a broad based training and experience in the diagnosis and management (nonoperative and operative) of orthopedic and foot and ankle problems. As an experienced physician with more than 15 years of foot and ankle specialization in orthopaedics, I attempt to take a highly interactive approach to caring for my patients. I believe the most important aspects of providing quality care are listening to the needs of patients, providing patient education, and presenting all the treatment options to the patient. This includes nonsurgical and surgical treatments options. I believe that knowledgeable patients make the best decisions about their own treatment. That is why I explain every step of the diagnostic process. Next, I want my patients to understand their condition: how it developed and how various treatment approaches can improve or repair the problem. With each treatment options, I present a realistic outlook on the results we can achieve. I'll also be frank about any risks that might be involved.
