Clifford Smith, MD, FACS, received his undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Smith completed his Surgical Internship and Surgical Residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, respectively. After serving for several years in the United States Navy, he completed his Fellowship in Minimally-Invasive Surgery at Greenville Hospital University of South Carolina in Greenville, South Carolina.Dr. Smith brings more than 12 years of surgical experience to Richmond Surgical. He served as the Department Head of General Surgery at Naval Hospital Okinawa in Japan, was deployed to Iraq from October of 2005 to March of 2006 when he was stationed at Naval Hospital Pensacola in Florida, was the Director of Surgical Services at Naval Hospital Sigonella in Italy, was the General Surgeon at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, and finally served as a General Surgeon at Naval Hospital Portsmouth, in Virginia, during which time he was deployed to Afghanistan from February to September of 2013. He recently retired from the United States Navy after 21 years of service.Dr. Smith is board-certified in General Surgery, is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the American Hernia Society, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. During his career with the United States Navy, he earned two Meritorious Service Medals, four Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal along with personal and unit awards.Dr. Smith is highly familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of multiple disease states and health concerns, with a strong interest in the surgical treatment of heartburn and reflux disease (GERD). He brings with him a special interest in minimally-invasive surgical procedures, and in particular a new minimally-invasive approach to the treatment of GERD, called Linx. Biography: Aman Banerjee, MD, is a board-certified general surgeon with Surgical Associates of Richmond. Dr. Aman Banerjee was born in India, and he grew up in Stamford, Connecticut. He completed his undergraduate education at the University of Richmond in 2005 and his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in 2009. He resides in Chesterfield County with his wife and two daughters. Dr. Banerjee is board certified in general surgery. He completed his surgical residency at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2016. There he received the Dudley P. Allen and Richard B. Fratianne scholarships for research. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He performs all aspects of general surgery. He has special interests in advanced wound care, laparoscopic robot-assisted minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, hernia surgery, colon, and rectal surgery. Dr. Banerjee is now accepting patients at our Midlothian office near Johnston-Willis Hospital. He will be performing surgeries at both Johnston-Willis and Chippenham Hospitals.

Biography: Dr. Glanville was born in Puerto Rico and currently resides in Midlothian, Virginia with her husband, son, and dog. Dr. Glanville received her Bachelor's degree and a minor in Psychology from Penn State University in 2003. Joanne received monetary grants during her time at Penn State for her GPA. Dr. Glanville decided to go back home and complete her doctorate in medicine from Ponce School of Medicine in 2008. She graduated medical school with clinical honors. Joanne then moved to New Jersey to complete her general surgery internship and residency from 2008-2014. Dr. Glanville then proceeded to complete an Endocrine Surgery fellowship at The National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD from 2014-2015. Dr. Glanville wanted to further her robotics training in general surgery, and so moved back to Hackensack, New Jersey to become the first robotic fellow in the United States at Hackensack University Medical Center from 2015-2016. Dr. Glanville is board certified by the American Board of General Surgery. Her practice specializes in endocrine surgery (thyroid, parathyroid, adrenals, and some pancreas) and robotic general surgery. She has special interest in foregut, colon, hernias, and gallbladder surgery.

They stay up to date on all surgery techniques and are often seen as leaders among their peers in the field of minimally invasive surgery.

Biography: David Bettinger, MD, is a general surgeon with Surgical Associates of Richmond. He was born in upstate New York and grew up in Richmond, Virginia. He graduated cum laude from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, and then continued with a Masters in Biology, receiving the Phi Sigma Research Scholarship and working as a graduate teaching assistant. During Dr. Bettinger's medical school tenure at VCU Health's Medical College of Virginia, he received the Carnation Scholarship, and was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha, Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Sigma Chi Honorary Leadership Society, Sigma Zeta Honorary Science Society, and performed basic science research. Some of his research is represented by numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Pediatric Surgery, and the Journal of Burn Care. Dr. Bettinger has presented before the Surgical Forum of the American College of Surgeons, the Virginia Academy of Science, the American Burn Association, and the Plastic Surgery Research Council. He was President of the Virginia Surgical Society in 2008. Dr. Bettinger is also a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, having served with the US Army Medical Units. When he joined SAR in 1996, he brought advanced laparoscopic training and ability, and he has been a proponent of laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication for acid reflux disease and laparoscopic adrenalectomy. Dr. Bettinger and his wife, Dr. Cynthia Bettinger, have three wonderful children. When not at work, he enjoys snow skiing, woodworking, and duck hunting.
