I say this with the utmost sincerity and severity; I felt more hurt, dehumanized, unseen, and unheard during my therapy session with Gericaha than I have by any other medical professional I’ve been treated by. In our first session, I expected Gericaha to build rapport with me, ask what I want from therapy, and make me feel safe/heard. Instead, after learning I was gay, trans and Jewish, and that I wanted to look gay, trans and Jewish, Gericaha accused me of “pushing my agenda” on others. She insinuated this was the reason I was having a hard time making friends, and that I should stop “trying so hard to be different, and pushing against the status quo, if I wanted people to like me.” It’s sad that a mental health professional believes that me being open, out, and comfortable with who I am makes me “aggressive and abrasive.” I was at an all time low when I saw her, and after my session I spiraled in a genuinely dangerous way. I have real fear in my heart for Gericaha's future patients.
