Irresponsible and zero compassion
I saw Dr. Aslam in 2022 at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix after being referred by my neurologist in Tucson. Despite undergoing MRIs and a lumbar puncture, my neurologist was unable to pinpoint the type of ataxia I had and felt it was best to pass the torch to a specialist at Barrow with more experience in ataxia. Unfortunately, my experience with Dr. Aslam was both distressing and deeply disappointing. After a very brief coordination test—simply having me point my fingers to hers and walk—she immediately diagnosed me with hereditary ataxia. Without further testing, she told me in a monotone voice that my condition would only worsen over time, that my symptoms would progress, and that she was sorry she couldn’t say otherwise. Despite my visible distress and tears, she showed no compassion, keeping a straight face and only asking if I had any questions. She also insisted that genetic testing was unnecessary because she was certain of her diagnosis.I chose to move forward
