Absolutely the best orthopedic surgeon
Dr. Abdel was able to correctly diagnose the problem with my knee (after 3 previous replacements at a different facility and 3 other specialist referrals that found nothing wrong and suggested I was either exaggerating the pain or seeking narcotics) within 30 minutes of reviewing the tests he ordered at Mayo Clinic. He also stated he was confident he could greatly improve the flexibility and reduce the pain. He did both. He is truly a miracle worker.

Arrogant and disrespectful
Rather than saying he could not help me, he insisted I travel to Mayo for simple steroid shots then “referred me” to another Mayo doctor , who would not see me. Once he “referred me” he promptly dismissed me as a Mayo patient, meaning I would have to reapply to be seen. After 20 years of exceptional care for an extremely rare and complex orthopedic issue with various other orthopedic specialists, including several surgeries. I have lost all faith in Mayo based on my one visit with him and will not return ever again. If you have a standard joint replacement I’m guessing he’s competent but if you have anything out of the ordinary you’re out of luck. If you’re not in Rochester the only reason to travel to Mayo is to get care for unusual complex issues. He mocked me because I told him that either hip arthritis or pubis sympysis arthritis or si joint arthritis was keeping me up at night (from an open book pelvic fracture, acetabular hip fracture and multiple hip dislocations and surgeries)

Dr. Abdel has replaced both of my hips and is scheduled to replace my knees. He has always been professional, courteous and patient with my husband and I. He explains and answers any and all questions we have. I would highly recommend Dr. Abdel for knee or hip replacement surgeries without any hesitation.

He's a competent orthopedic surgeon, however, what stuck with me was how arrogantly insecure he is. I witnessed how he treated the nurses, and as someone who has been blessed with a long, successful career I was astounded by him immaturity. He's a black mark on the Mayo brand, and I if I ever need to go back I will not support his career. We all have the ability to grow and improve, and he needs to take a long look in the mirror. I've seen many like him, and its self defeating in the end.

I had a very difficult chronic knee infection requiring extraordinary steps to remove a knee implant for 4 months and then replace the implant with a new one. In Chicago, they discussed amputation but Dr Abdel was able to not only save the leg but put in a new knee allowing me to be pain-free and resume normal activities after more 10 years of chronic pain. I would highly recommend him to anyone. His personality is warm and comforting.
