Fine surgeon, but rather insensitive
I'm a trans woman (MTF) who had a thyroid cartilage reduction (ie Adam's apple reduction) roughly 3 years ago. This is generally a quick, safe, and easy procedure, and I'm very pleased with the results overall. However, during my consultation, pre-surgery, and follow-up meetings he straight up bullied me about my lower vocal range – something I wasn't even trying to change at the time, but am highly sensitive and insecure about. He was likely just trying to convince me to get more work done, as his department also offers feminizing voice therapy. Regardless, I had very clearly expressed my disinterest in it at the initial consult – yet he continued bullying at every possible opportunity. Dr. Courey, each trans person's journey and goals are totally different. I alone get to decide what's right for me. It was completely out of line for you to persistently shame me. My voice and my womanhood are valid even if it falls outside of cis-normativity.

Dr. Courey (at UCSF). looked at my atrophied vocal chords for my recommended me to a neurologist. He suspected I might have other issues and it turned out I have adult onset of myotonic muscular dystrophy. He is an excellent doctor. I wish he was still at UCSF as I have a need to see a great ENT. Best wishes.

I saw Dr. Courey while he was head of the Voice and Swallowing Clinic at UCSF. My first experience was sending him an email asking if he treated my condition. This was followed up by an appoinment in SF where the exam was thorough and complete. While the issue I have is surgically managed Dr. Courey advised that I wait because the loss of my voice was not due to disease but frustration with prior treatment. We did perform surgery that fall and five times after that - the condition isn't curable. I always found Dr. Courey to be truly concerned and caring, professional and open to discussing treatment plans and options. He has a great demeanor and sense of humor.

I almost died of cancer because of Courey. My ENT found a lump on my Larynx and called it a raging infection! I was sent to Courey and without a physical examination he told me the lump is from the way I talk and his speech therapist agreed without examination . I had to go back to my ENT to take a screen shot of the lump to show Courey at the next visit. When Courey saw the lump he than said it is from the way I talk and pushed me on his speech therapist for tongue exercises. I begged him for months about the pain and gave me pain killers for a lump that is causing pain in my ear. I went back to my ENT in tears and he told courey to do a biopsy . Courey does the biopsy than goes away on vacation. When he comes back he walks in and says it's CANCER. I looked at him and said now what ! He said I must consult my team ? This is after 5 months. The realization is Courey made the cancer grow to a inoperable size for that region. A simple operation turned into 8 weeks of radiation.

Dr. Courey misdiagnosed my voice as 'vocal cord paresis'. My voice could have been fixed with an excellent voice therapist. Instead, he injected my cord with a substance that left me unable to talk for almost two months! He conceded that he over-injected me and had me come in for another general anesthesia procedure to try to take out some of the garbage he injected and left me with vocal hemorrhage from cutting open my vocal cord. In the end my voice is worse, maybe forever. Stay away!

I had an appointment with Mark Courey MD. He did not examine me. He reviewed the results of tests done by a resident at the hospital and told me what he thought I should do. He claimed he did the examination in his initial report but after I complained that the report was wrong he changed it saying another physician did the examination. I gave the examining physician a list of my current medical issues and madication. The report Dr. Courey wrote did not include my current medications.
