You can’t get better but TAR & Ankle Are Complex
Dr John Reach performed TAR on me December 19, 2023 exactly one year ago. I am highly athletic and I am highly educated: a well published scholar. Dr Reach is very good , an excellent TAR surgeon in USA. But TAR and ankles are complex. Dr Reach evaluated me for about four months and did all different tests. He was not able to get testing injection in my ankle but another podiatrist was able to test it, showing TAR would give me extra range and removing my severe pain. Dr Reach used Inbone II and that is his expertise. After one year my ankle pain is gone and I golf by waking and ski, walk for two hours , elliptical and bike one hour. However , like almost 90% of TAR patients , I have developed three bone growths in my ankle and very uncomfortable nerve pain on the top of my foot . Dr Reach predicted these could happen , I will have to do correcting surgery in three months. I did get some range back; don’t allow Achilles extension because that not necessarily useful..

One of the best
Excellent, compassionate doctor. Performed multiple surgeries on my foot correcting a botched surgery by another doctor. I wish I could find him as I badly need an ankle replacement.

Missing in action.
I guess my experience was good since I am able to walk. Still have pain even though I had a TAR. I wanted to make an appointment but he seems to have disappeared. Located him at Cleveland Clinic but he is gone from there now. Very strange.

Foot and ankle
If u are thinking of having this dr operate on you PLEASE run the other way and don’t look back. Don’t let him put a hand on you. Believe me, you will be devastated if he works on you. Choosing this man to operate on me for 4 hours was THE biggest mistake I’ve made in my 67 years

Great surgeon, but seems to have disappeared. He did 2 surgery’s Oct 2021 and August 2022 (terrific surgeon). I went to make surgical follow up and all they said he is gone from the practice since April.

He ruined my life - arrogant & doesn't listen
Shushed me so he could think when telling him something specific about one of my symptoms. Sends me for another test, placating my attempt to discuss my injury. I ask if it was the most comprehensive test to show a specific injury, says, yes. Now, the moment he silenced me ended up being an important clue toward a diagnosis. Not surprisingly, the radiology report showed the injury; he then disagreed with the radiologist(who was right). He turned a simple 6-8 week immobilization & rehab stint into an incredibly expensive($15,000) multi-year odyssey full of pain & learning how to walk again after the rehab he sent me to made me worse. Now, I will have this for the rest of my life. If it's not clear-cut, easy & straightforward, stay away from him. He has only one lane(TAR), veer from it, & he will take you down a very long painful path. He ruined my life. I would have had a much better outcome if he'd been an active listener instead of one filled with self-important hubris.

Total Ankle Replacement - 6+years Later
I cannot begin to tell you how Dr Reach changed my life. In Sept-2016 he performed what I consider to be a miracle surgery on my very painful ankle. I was 66yrs old at the time, 6'2" and 250lbs ... a big guy and active for my age. I'd had a nasty sports injury 35yrs earlier and still had 9 big screws I hadn't ever had removed. The surgery and subsequent recovery went exactly as Dr Reach had described to me beforehand, and within 10wks I was walking again normally. And now at nearly age 73 I am happy to report that my replacement ankle still feels just as good as new and I am not prevented from pursuing my favorite outdoor and exercise activities. Dr Reach you are simply the best in my book!

Glad I returned to Dr. Reach
I have been struggling with a dislocation in my right foot. When I first saw Dr. Reach over two years ago, he recommended surgery. Because of Pandemic restrictions and my thinking that I would be able to handle the pain and stumbling, I put off the surgery for too long. When I returned to Dr. Reach's office, I knew I had made the right decision to proceed with the surgery. Dr. Reach went through all of the information and details about the surgery; I left with a very clear picture of what my treatment would be. I just want to add that having a pleasant and supportive staff as he does, was very reassuring to me.

A multitude of errors: Virtual visit scheduled, did not call, was told he was running late and he would call soon. 1 hour later, called back, was told it was rescheduled to 10:00 AM, nobody called and notified me of that, was then told it was internet issues, and now the call was scheduled for 5:00 PM. Doctor called @ 5:45 said the office should have said, "at end of rounds, not 5:00" After call, went to office for a specimen to be sent to lab, was told about 5 days. After 10 days of not hearing, called back left a message no return call. 3 days later, called back, they said they would ck and call back. Never called back, I called left a message. When they finally returned my call, they informed me the lab lost my results. You would think if a practice does not have any results to a test, they would follow up with the lab. Dr. Reach may be a good doctor, I will never know, as the lack of communication and miscommunication of the staff has soured me on the practice.
