Sound familiar? he listens with an empathetic look. Seems engaged. Gives you pretty much whatever you ask for. Breaks a few little rules for you. Doesn’t challenge you. Are those good things? As I learned from 5 years under his care, A doctor who gives you whatever you want doesn’t really care about you. Read your office notes. They are bland and unspecific. Visits where you are at your worst or your best read almost the same. This man is lazy. Don’t let him fool you. He doesn’t actually care, he just wants you to believe he does, to make you feel like you’ve been heard, give you what you want, then get you out of his office as fast as he can. But think back: has he made a comment or two that felt cruel but with that same smooth tone? Given in to your requests only for you to realize later he was too lazy even to bother talking you out of your own bad ideas? He’s very very good at what he does: seeming competent, empathetic and responsible when he is truly none of these things.
