If You Live with Long Covid, See Someone Else

I had a severe Covid infection which triggered severe Long Covid in November 2020. I saw Dr. Koralnik that month for my Long Covid, and he asked me how much I had recovered. I had no idea what was happening to me, so I guessed 50%. In March 2021, I saw him again. By then, I had realized that I was recovering much more slowly. So when he asked again how much I had recovered, I said something like 'I know I said 50% in December, but it was more like 0% then. As of now, I think I'm maybe 33% recovered.' He was taken aback, and he asked me if I had lied in December about my recovery. I was shocked and assured him I didn't lie. Also, he didn't seem to care about my reported symptoms but focused on whether I was seeing a therapist to manage my anxiety. He didn't explicitly say it, but his focus on my anxiety suggested to me that he thought some of my reported symptoms were solely a product of my anxiety. His physician assistants were kind and informative, but he was dismissive and impatient.

Obnoxious-knows nothing about Lyme disease
Waited 10 months for an appointment. He’s a know it all that knows nothing about chronic Lyme disease. Even though I was bit more than 37 years ago he was fixated on getting test results that proved I had Lyme and not syphilis! How obnoxious and rude! Total waste of time. No treatment at all. He should be ashamed of himself. Should be fired.

Traumatizing
I’m still processing my experience with this guy and office. He LAUGHED in my face and told me my years of debilitating symptoms is probably caused by me not getting a good night sleep was wild. I’m genuinely in shock at how I waited months to get in, have photos of alarming symptoms the he even said “was scaring all the staff” to then not acknowledge those symptoms further and laugh throughout the entire appointment… I just would never recommend this guy to anyone because I’d never want someone to feel the way I felt leaving that office. Shame on him and shame on northwestern.

Never Trust a Neurologist
Dr. Koralnik has the bedside manner of a table lamp. Except that table lamps don’t completely invalidate your entire experience, chastise/condescend that you should be “more grateful” that it’s not worse, imply it’s all in your head, and kick you out with no treatment or answers. This is a devastating pandemic, no one should have to stroke a doctor’s ego to get basic care. Would’ve put zero/negative stars if it let me.

Bait & switch
I saw Dr. Koralnik on 02/22/2023 for long COVID. I chose Northwestern's long COVID clinic because of a glowing article in Chigage magazine, and because of this languare on their website: "The goal of the Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive COVID-19 Center is to guide your long-term care while you recover from COVID-19." This implies that they have treatments for long COVID. They do not, nor does anyone else that I know of. After various brief tests to confirm my long COVID symptoms, the only "treatment" they suggested was that I go to occupational therapy to learm how to deal with brain fog. Their main focus was to get me to enroll in studies, which would entail their doing various bodily fluid tests and a seven-night at-home sleep study, the results of which they would not be sharing with me. So, if you want to enroll in studies, this is the place for you. If you actually want someone to "guide your long-term care", don't get fooled by their bait & switch marketing statements.

Be warned - I booked an appointment 10 MONTHS in advance. Dr. Koralnik canceled two weeks before the appointment because he was not going to be in the office. The next appointment offered was in February 2022. 6 months from now; 13 months from originally scheduling. I did not ask to cancel. I would like to keep the appointment. He would not make himself available sooner. The office booked me with someone else for December, which was a full year after the appointment was made. This is really disappointing and speak volumes about their lack of care for their patients and for those suffering with the effects of covid. Save your time - go elsewhere.
