A laughable experience
Without a greeting, he came in and sat down, asked me what I was there for. After telling him my concerns he sat there and stared at me for a what felt like a full minute. When I told him that I was referred to rheumatology after testing, he said he was not sure why. Without an explanation. I asked if we could talk more about a few weeks of my concerns. He continued to dismiss me and made me feel like I was telling him lies. He kept using words that I would never have heard of before or understand. When I asked him what these words meant he again made me feel like I was a pain for asking for clarification. At the end of the visit I tried to speak up for myself and ask him what the plan was going forward or if he had any suggestions for me since he had not made ANY suggestions for a young adult living in pain. I don’t think he would have spoken another word if I didn’t ask.

Incompetent
Went to see Dr. Martin to discuss Ehlers-Danlos or other connective tissue diseases. He immediately said 'You don't have Ehlers-Danlos. I don't actually know that much about it, but you don't have it' and completely dismissed me. By the end of the appointment, be begrudgingly said he would refer me to a geneticist (which Lahey doesn't have). It took over a year to get an geneticist appointment, during which time I emailed him and asked that he complete the referral process online per instructions from my insurance. He quibbled with my wording in my email and then said he had 'never been asked to pursue a prior auth for a referral to another specialist' and refused to do so. He is condescending and incompetent and should not be dealing with patients.

Worst Dr I have ever had. He asked questions but clearly did not listen to answers. Seemed beyond miserable to be there to begin with. He has no wait list for a reason …. Run! Very arrogant and insensitive

Dr Martin was patient, listened to all of my concerns and even took the time at the end to ask if there was anything else that I hadn’t mentioned that I wanted to address. He was friendly and listened to all of my concerns and gave me clear advice on what I could do to manage my issues.

Not empathetic or helpful
My daughter was referred to this practice by our PCG for treatment of fibromyalgia. It took 6 calls and 2 months to get an appointment. We walk in and Dr. Martin says he doesn't treat fibromyalgia. In fact, he said rheumatologists do not treat it. Please tell that to Lahey Health because, it's all over the website AND I specifically asked when making the appointment. All that said, he treated my daughter with chronic pain with distain, and told her studies show you can manage fibromyalgia if she could workout for 30 minutes every day. (Do you know people suffering from the chronic and random pain of fibromyalgia can hardly get out of bed?) When we asked him for references for any specialists who could treat her, he referred her back to her PCG. Yes, you read that correctly. Learn from our experience do not make 6 calls and wait 2 months to see Dr. Martin. He doesn't know any more about fibromyalgia than you can pick up on the internet.

Thought it was an ok appointment until the end….
He listened to my symptoms and told me that my tests didn’t show anything rheumatological even though I had a positive Ana and high inflammation. It took my husband telling him his concerns to get me a referral to a neurologist because apparently me stating that I’ve been dizzy and passing out wasn’t good enough my husband also had to repeat it for me. He told me I no longer needed to seek rheumatologist help because none of my problems were rheumatoid related. Even though all of my tests say otherwise. I’ve been finally out of a super bad flare for a couple weeks and my tests are back to normal markers for the first time in six months. He blamed everything on fibromyalgia which does explain an extent of the pain but not my blood tests. He also is not socially aware at all which I suppose isn’t his fault but he didn’t show any compassion until I literally started crying while I explained how I’ve been in severe pain for half a year and couldn’t stand it anymore. Wouldn’t recommend

There's a reason there isn't a waitlist...
If you are looking for a compassionate and well versed rheumatologist this is NOT the doctor for you. There is a reason there isn't a waitlist to see Dr. Martin while it is nearly impossible to get into rheumatology anywhere else. My appointment lasted 15 minutes and my symptoms were not taken into consideration at all. My appointment note lists details from an examination that NEVER occurred. During my appointment Dr. Martin had stated my symptoms would only be a concern if I had a positive ANA. He stated if I had a positive ANA he would follow up. Low and behold I had a positive ANA come back with markers indicating subclinical lupus, but never heard from him. When I reached out with specific questions and asked for evidenced based practice to support his claim that this was likely a fluke he became extremely defensive and rude. For anyone who is suffering with an autoimmune disorder save yourself the flare up and find a different doctor!
