Biography: I am a board-certified pediatric pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist, with extensive experience in cystic fibrosis, asthma, and global health. My deep passion for correcting health disparities globally and in populations affected by asthma and cystic fibrosis regionally is strongly rooted in my upbringing. My father was a New York-trained pediatrician, and a supportive and motivating role model who shaped my life-changing commitment to community service. As a result, following medical training, pediatric specialty training, and pediatric pulmonary subspecialty training in the United States, I was committed to serve the underserved from afar. I have had the privilege of working with the pediatric pulmonary team at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) since 2000. My early years at CUIMC were influenced by Professor Robert (Bob) Mellins until his passing in 2012. While working in Stamford Hospital in Stamford, Connecticut during the last year of my pulmonary fellowship, I became acutely aware of the underserved needs of a sick pediatric population in southern Connecticut that, for various reasons, did not have access to care. I established a pulmonary practice in this region and became engaged in program development in three main areas: cystic fibrosis, asthma and global health. I also established a cystic fibrosis care clinic in Stamford Hospital, which led to my current position as the director of the Sue and John L. Weinberg Cystic Fibrosis Center at Columbia. In addition to my clinical practice, I have been involved in research in asthma, RSV bronchiolitis, and cystic fibrosis. In recent years, grants from the CF Foundation and CF Foundation's therapeutic and development network have enabled me to focus my research on cystic fibrosis.

Biography: My interest in pediatric pulmonology stems from my early pediatric training, where I first learned about the wide spectrum of respiratory diseases that affect children. I recognized the unique opportunity I would have as a pulmonologist to make a difference in young people's lives. During a pediatric pulmonology fellowship at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, I developed a strong foundation in a variety of respiratory issues, and in my current practice I diagnose and treat children of all ages with lung conditions including asthma, chronic lung disorders of infancy, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary hypoplasia, obstructive sleep apnea, obesity-related pulmonary diseases, and pulmonary dysfunction in musculoskeletal disorders. My patients come from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds and I strive to provide culturally sensitive and evidence-based clinical care. At Columbia, I am part of a team with unique expertise with performing pulmonary function and exercise physiology tests to assess our patients. We also work closely with other specialties to manage children and adolescents with complex conditions. I am also involved in research and educational activities. I have studied long-term pulmonary complications in children with sickle cell disease and congenital diaphragmatic hernia, as well as in those who are undergoing cancer therapy or stem cell transplantation. I am member of national committees and networks of experts who study rare lung disorders. I am engaged in clinical trials of new drug therapies for children with interstitial lung diseases, and am also actively engaged in pediatric asthma research. Additionally, I lead the pulmonology fellowship training program here at Columbia, through which we teach and train the next generation of physicians to become future leaders in pediatric pulmonology.

Biography: My interest in pediatric pulmonology started early in my training, when I had the opportunity to work in an asthma clinic for children. I chose to specialize in lung diseases affecting children because this population is very special; they are both inherently vulnerable but also remarkably resilient. I love developing relationships with my patients and their families and consider it a privilege to take part in their care. Children are referred to me for a variety of reasons, such as difficulty breathing, frequent cough, difficulty exercising, snoring, swallowing problems, weakness, prematurity, and frequent lung infections. Left untreated, many of the underlying conditions causing these symptoms can have severe long term effects. It is essential that growing children are able to sleep well, breathe comfortably, be physically active, and receive adequate nutrition safely. I work with families, my colleagues, and physicians in other medical specialties to ensure that my patients reach these goals. My research interests have been primarily related to basic mechanisms driving inflammation in patients with asthma. In our laboratory, I work with other pulmonologists and scientists to study the roles of various proteins produced by our body and how they can worsen or mitigate asthma. More recently, I have started to study how these proteins affect lung development in babies. Another one of my interests is medical education, and I am involved in an innovative project designing instructional tools to teach doctors in training more about pediatric pulmonology.

Ways to advocate for yourself during appointments include: preparing questions in advance to ask your doctor, bringing someone with you to listen and take notes, asking your Pediatric Pulmonology Specialist to clarify when you do not understand something, and being honest when you have concerns.
If you are unsure about a recommended treatment, tell your doctor you want to seek a second opinion. A quality Pediatric Pulmonology Specialist will not take offense at this; rather, a good doctor wants to get as much information as possible to make the right treatment choice. If your Pediatric Pulmonology Specialist does question your interest in a second opinion, it may be a sign that another Pediatric Pulmonology Specialist may be a better fit for you.
