Biography: Daniel S. O'Connor, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, Co-director of the Center for CardioOncology, Cardiologist for the Aortic Program and Cardiac Intensivist at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. In addition to diagnostic catheterizations in complex congenital heart disease, he performs over 200 atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closures and over 100 left atrial appendage closures annually. He has decades of experience in closing patent ductus arteriosus and ventricular septal defects, as well as, stenting coarctation of the aorta. Currently, Dr. Sommer serves as the national cardiology principal investigator for the GORE RELIEF clinical study to evaluate patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure for migraine headache relief using a device called the GORE CARDIOFORM Septal Occlude.Dr. Sommer collaborates closely with his Pediatric Cardiology colleagues at Columbia performing transcatheter pulmonary valve replacements in the congenital population. Together, with Barbara Robbins, NP, he provides primary cardiac care to a population of more than 300 pediatric and adult patients with congenital heart disease. Biography: Frederick A. Ehlert, MD, is a cardiac electrophysiologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Ehlert's areas of expertise include sudden cardiac death, pacemaker and defibrillator therapy and chronic device and lead extraction and revisions. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed papers, reviews, and book chapters in electrophysiology and presented his original research at scientific meetings. Dr. Ehlert graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, he completed his internship and residency training in internal medicine at St. Luke's-Roosevelt, and his cardiology and electrophysiology fellowship training at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Ehlert has been on the Columbia faculty since 1993, and became the Program Director of the Electrophysiology Fellowship at Columbia in 2006. Dr. Ehlert is Director of Physician Development for Columbia HeartSource, establishing its electrophysiology Quality Assurance practices.
