Care Philosophy: My philosophy towards my practice of surgery is very simple-treat others as I would want to be treated. In evaluating a patient my first priority is deciding whether an operation is necessary. If surgery is needed, I explain the procedure and recovery in straight forward terms. I always encourage questions; I feel the more someone understands about their healthcare, the better prepared they are for surgery and the recovery. Many procedures such as hernia repair, thyroid/parathyroid surgery, breast surgery and gallbladder surgery can now be preformed as an outpatient. Minimally invasive surgery is frequently an option and is preferred as long as it is just as safe as the more traditional surgical procedures. I strive for a quick recovery making my patients as comfortable as possible. No one wants to have surgery, but if it becomes necessary then care should be given as much empathy, safety and comfort as possible.

Biography: Telehealth visits are available.Dr. Abbate was born and raised in Massachusetts. He attended medical school at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. After receiving his medical degree, he returned to Boston for his surgical training at Harvard's Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Dr. Abbate was a distinguished resident and was selected to serve as Chief of the Surgical Teaching Service after completion of his surgical training. While at MGH, under the mentoring of pioneering pancreatic surgeon, Dr. Andrew Warshaw, Dr. Abbate gained expertise in pancreatic, biliary and complex gastrointestinal surgery.In 2002, Dr. Abbate moved to San Antonio to serve in the United States Air Force. Dr. Abbate's military career included a tour as a combat surgeon in Iraq. He received an honorable discharge in 2006.In 2006, Dr. Abbate began surgical practice in San Antonio. In 2010, he merged his practice with the START Center for Cancer Care. His practice encompasses surgical oncology and general surgery with special interest in breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, gastric cancer, gastroesophageal reflux and gallbladder disease. Dr. Abbate is trained on the DaVinci Robotic Surgical System and a high-volume provider of robotic surgery.Dr. Abbate is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgery.
