Biography: Dr. Piotr Jerzy Gorecki is a graduate from Nicholas Copernicus Academy of Medicine at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, one of the oldest and most recognized medical schools and universities in Europe. Following his residency training at the New York Methodist Hospital, he completed Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Mayo Clinic. Serving as a Chief of Advanced Laparoscopy and Section Chief of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery since 2001, he has introduced and developed a minimally invasive program for advanced GI/ Foregut, colorectal, solid organ and most notably the minimally invasive metabolic and bariatric surgery with accreditation at the American College of Surgeons / MBSAQIP as a Comprehensive Weight Loss Center with Adolescent Qualification.Clinical PracticeInspired by long-standing interest in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) and followed by completion of MIS fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, my clinical activities and expertise have been focused around advancing laparoscopic techniques and minimally invasive approaches to disease of the foregut, solid organs, emergency laparoscopy and most noticeably laparoscopy for morbid obesity and obesity surgery for adolescents.Furthermore, our minimally invasive metabolic and bariatric practice was awarded as an ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence in 2005 (currently combined with American College of Surgeons (ACS) and with Adolescent Qualifications under ACS MBSAQIP / Quality Improvement Project. Our program has been one of the initial metabolic and bariatric centers of excellence in the tri-state area. Indeed, bariatric surgery for adolescents including long-term outcomes and modification of operative techniques has been my long-standing interest that resulted in establishing regional multidisciplinary metabolic and bariatric surgery center of excellence with adolescent designation. Moreover, system-based practice and value based surgical methods utilizing hand-sewn anastomotic techniques resulted not only in major cost savings to our institution but also in reduction of use of disposable instrumentation and reduction of medical waste, while further optimizing and enhancing highest quality patient care.To advance our clinical and research activities I have initiated, organized and maintained a prospectively collected bariatric database while maintaining busy clinical practice and surgical education to our surgical residents, medical students, PA students and GI fellows.Clinical LeadershipServing as a Chief of Advanced Laparoscopy and Section Chief of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery since 2001, I have introduced and developed a minimally invasive program for advanced GI/ Foregut, colorectal, solid organ and most notably the minimally invasive metabolic and bariatric surgery with accreditation at the ACS MBSAQIP center. At the NYP Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, I have performed more than 3900 laparoscopic foregut and bariatric operations since the inception of the advanced MIS program in 2001 with the fortune of not experiencing any perioperative mortality and enjoying high patient satisfaction and an excellent safety profile for our clinical activities. These outcomes were reported at regional, national and international meetings (including SAGES, ASMBS, ACS, IFSO, DDW, NYSS, WCS) and more than 75 papers/abstracts were presented further contributing to the growing national and international recognition of our Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program at the NYP Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.

Care Philosophy: Basem Nady Azab, MD, is the director of surgical oncology at Staten Island University Hospitals Florina Cancer Center at Northwell, one of the largest cancer programs in the New York metropolitan area. Hes the first and only doctor in the country who is triple board-certified by the American Board of Surgery, American Board of Medicine and American Board of Surgical Oncology. My father was a firefighter, and I developed the same passion for helping others, Dr. Azab explains. Thats why I became a doctor and chose a career path where I could really make a difference. Prior to joining Northwell, Dr. Azab completed his internal medicine and surgical residency at Staten Island University Hospital, where he received the honorary Humanistic Award for exceptional patient care. He continued his training in a two-year surgical oncology fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. Azab's areas of focus include complex procedures and minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery to treat a wide range of cancers. Under his leadership, the Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) Program was created at Staten Island University Hospital, the first of its kind in Richmond County. It offers state-of-the-art therapies for patients with advanced abdominal cancer, pairing the latest treatments and surgical techniqueslike vascular reconstruction with Whipple surgeryto deliver the best results. Compassion and accessibility are also important to Dr. Azab. Most of my patients have my personal cell phone number, he says. Theyre very much involved in the treatment discussion, and we work together to find the best path forward. As assistant professor at Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Dr. Azab trains the next generation of surgical oncologists. His work has been featured in nearly 5 publications, he has spoken at several international and national oncology meetings, and hes a member of numerous professional societies, including the American College of Surgeons. Outside of his professional duties, Dr. Azab is a master chess player. It's a game of strategy, much like the job of a surgeon, he explains. You must avoid decision fatigue and be on your toes, which is critical in the operating room. For Dr. Azab, the gift heis able to give patients is the most rewarding: It is gratifying to know that I play a part in helping my patients not only live, but also enjoy life moving forward, he says.

Read More About These Treatments: https://columbiasurgery.org/conditions-and-treatments/retroperitoneal-sarcomas-and-pelvic-sarcomas Dr. Yoon was an early advocate for minimally invasive robotic surgery and has performed over 300 robotic procedures including robotic gastrectomies (stomach removal). He has one of the world's largest experiences in performing prophylactic total gastrectomies for patients with hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC syndrome) secondary to germline CDH1 mutation. He pioneered a technique for connection of the small bowel to the esophagus after total gastrectomy that is used by former surgical trainees and colleagues throughout the country due to its extremely low leakage rate. Dr. Yoon graduated from Harvard University and received his M.D. from the University of California at San Diego. He completed his residency in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and his fellowship in surgical oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He was an Associate Professor of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School before joining the staff at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 2012.
