Care Philosophy: I realize how scary it can be to receive a life-threatening diagnosis, and firmly believe in taking the time to clearly communicate with my patients about the nature of their disease and their various treatment options. This can not only vastly improve our patients' experiences, but also their treatment outcomes, as an educated patient is able to make informed decisions about care and reclaim some of the autonomy that can be lost when coping with a cancer diagnosis. In the midst of all the cutting-edge science and technology that we offer, I find it extremely important to remember that it is the patient who is the center of it all. I genuinely care about my patients, and instilling a sense of hope, sharing a laugh, or a kind word can be as important as all the medical advances and state-of-the-art science.

Care Philosophy: Meekoo Dhar, MD, is a Hematologist/Medical oncologist who practices at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) and SIUH Princes Bay. She specializes in managing breast cancer and gynecologic malignancies, such as ovarian, cervical and uterine cancers. She also treats blood related diseases and benign hematologic conditions such as anemia and clotting disorders. Im very thorough in my evaluation of my patients and take my time with them, she says. I believe in taking care of the whole person and not just the disease. Her treatment approach is grounded in the latest evidence-based medicine and clinical research. She is actively involved in studying the safety and efficacy of medical therapies for breast and ovarian cancers. Dr. Dhar has been passionate about helping others since she was a child. I can't think of a better way to express that passion than taking care of cancer patients, she says. She attended medical school at the University of Kashmir and completed her internal medicine residency and a Hematology-Oncology fellowship at New York Presbyterian, Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. At Northwell Health, Dr. Dhar works as a team with pathologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, breast surgeons, and gynecologic oncologists to create personalized treatment plans. Residents and fellows, nurse practitioners and medical assistants are also an important part of the care team. We have a nice camaraderie, she says. We dont hesitate to reach out to each other and make it a point to discuss each patients care. Dr. Dhar is an Assistant Professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and Program Director of the Hematology and Medical Oncology fellowship program at Staten Island University Hospital. She feels it is her duty to educate the next generation of Hematologists and Oncologists. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Medical Association. She also provides pro bono cancer consultation services to physicians and their patients through the India Association of the Garden State and the Kashmiri Overseas Association. Dr. Dhar finds the long-lasting relationships she develops with patients and their families a fulfilling part of her work. Its very rewarding to make a difference in other peoples lives.

Care Philosophy: Eleny Romanos-Sirakis, MD is a board-certified specialist in pediatric hematology/oncology. She currently serves as the director of the pediatric hemoglobinopathy specialty center at Staten Island University Hospital, where comprehensive care is provided to patients with sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies. She is committed to education and research at SIUH she is actively involved in further advancing research at SIUH as the co-chair of the pediatric research and scholarship committee. Her research interests include sickle cell disease and pediatric pain management. She is also an active committee member of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.Dr. Romanos-Sirakis provides clinical evaluations and treatments for a wide variety of hematology and oncology concerns. She provides care for pediatric patients from the newborn period through 21 years of age. She specializes in the care of patients with anemia, low white blood cell counts, low platelet counts, bleeding disorders, clotting disorders, sickle cell disease, enlarged lymph nodes, leukemia, lymphoma, and solid tumors.Providing optimal care and assessments, while minimizing the effects of treatments on patients' and families' quality of life is of highest priority for Dr. Romanos-Sirakis. She has additional training in pediatric pain management and is actively involved in the development of the SIUH Pediatric Comfort Campaign to minimize pain for children undergoing procedures and to improve overall pain management for pediatric patients. Dr. Romanos-Sirakis is dedicated to providing personalized and high-quality care to all of her patients.
