In evaluating a patient my first priority is deciding whether an operation is necessary. If surgery is needed, I explain the procedure and recovery in straight forward terms. I always encourage questions; I feel the more someone understands about their healthcare, the better prepared they are for surgery and the recovery. Many procedures such as hernia repair, thyroid/parathyroid surgery, breast surgery and gallbladder surgery can now be preformed as an outpatient. Minimally invasive surgery is frequently an option and is preferred as long as it is just as safe as the more traditional surgical procedures. I strive for a quick recovery making my patients as comfortable as possible. No one wants to have surgery, but if it becomes necessary then care should be given as much empathy, safety and comfort as possible.
