Indeed, bariatric surgery for adolescents including long-term outcomes and modification of operative techniques has been my long-standing interest that resulted in establishing regional multidisciplinary metabolic and bariatric surgery center of excellence with adolescent designation.Moreover, system-based practice and value based surgical methods utilizing hand-sewn anastomotic techniques resulted not only in major cost savings to our institution but also in reduction of use of disposable instrumentation and reduction of medical waste, while further optimizing and enhancing highest quality patient care.To advance our clinical and research activities I have initiated, organized and maintained a prospectively collected bariatric database while maintaining busy clinical practice and surgical education to our surgical residents, medical students, PA students and GI fellows.Clinical LeadershipServing as a Chief of Advanced Laparoscopy and Section Chief of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery since 2001, I have introduced and developed a minimally invasive program for advanced GI/ Foregut, colorectal, solid organ and most notably the minimally invasive metabolic and bariatric surgery with accreditation at the ACS MBSAQIP center.At the NYP Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, I have performed more than 3900 laparoscopic foregut and bariatric operations since the inception of the advanced MIS program in 2001 with the fortune of not experiencing any perioperative mortality and enjoying high patient satisfaction and an excellent safety profile for our clinical activities. These outcomes were reported at regional, national and international meetings (including SAGES, ASMBS, ACS, IFSO, DDW, NYSS, WCS) and more than 75 papers/abstracts were presented further contributing to the growing national and international recognition of our Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program at the NYP Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.

Biography: Mehraneh Dorna Jafari, MD, is Associate Professor of Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Chief of Colorectal Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. She is the director of clinical research in the department of Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical Center. She is board-certified in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery. Dr. Jafari specializes in the comprehensive care of colorectal cancer patients, patients with peritoneal surface disease as well as those patients with benign colorectal disease.Dr Jafari works with a world-renowned group of multidisciplinary specialists to help promote a patient centered treatment plan for her patients, including radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, gastroenterologists, and interventional radiologists.Her goal is to provide precision medicine to patients that is safe and effective.Dr. Jafari has expertise in minimal access techniques, including laparoscopic, and robotic surgery. In addition, she has special interests in sphincter preserving surgery (helping rectal cancer patients avoid a permanent ostomy), maintaining fertility in cancer patients, and improving quality of life and bowel function after rectal surgery. Dr Jafari has been at forefront of research with regards to improving outcomes using enhanced recovery and narcotic sparing protocols.Dr. Jafari is among a small number of surgeons who offers surgery for metastatic colon, appendiceal and peritoneal surface disease. She utilizes cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), which involves heated chemotherapy applied directly within the abdominal cavity following removal of cancerous tumors.Dr. Jafari's clinical research focuses on quality of life and oncological outcomes for colorectal cancer patients. Biography: Dina Podolsky, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. She is a board-certified general surgeon who graduated with honors from Rutgers University, where she also received her medical degree, and completed a residency in general surgery at Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Podolsky then completed fellowship training in complex abdominal wall reconstruction and robotic surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where she worked closely with one of the world's leading hernia surgeons, Dr. Novitsky. She is a member of several national organizations, including the Americas Hernia Society and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. Dr. Podolsky has received numerous awards for her training and teaching, including the Leo M. Davidoff Award for Outstanding Teaching and the Golden Apple Teaching Award. Dr. Podolsky specializes in all aspects of hernia surgery, including inguinal, ventral, and complex abdominal wall reconstruction, employing minimally invasive techniques with laparoscopic and robotic surgery. She has presented research at major professional associations and continues to be active in research, publishing both academic research and textbook chapters. Dr. Podolsky currently sees patients in midtown Manhattan and Washington Heights.
