Biography: Margaret Jayich, MD is a board-certified general surgeon. Dr. Jayich is fellowship-trained in breast surgical oncology and specializes 100% in breast surgery and oncoplastic breast preservation surgery. Fellowship training is the highest level of medical training in the U.S. Dr. Jayich received her fellowship from the prestigious University of Southern California. She completed her residency in General Surgery at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. She received her MD degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. Dr. Jayich is one of few MD fellowship-trained breast surgeons in Alaska. She trained with Dr. Melvin Silverstein at the prestigious Hoag Breast Center in Newport Beach, CA. Dr. Silverstein is widely regarded as one of the world leaders in oncoplastic breast preservation surgery having written five books on breast cancer surgery. The Hoag Breast Center has 7 breast surgeons, 4 breast oncologists, and 15 MDs in radiation oncology. The new specialty of breast preservation surgery provides significant benefit to women who must undergo surgical removal of breast tumors. While traditional treatment of breast tumors can involve a mastectomy which involves the removal of the entire breast, resulting in significant disfigurement, the new specialty of breast preservation surgery is designed to remove the breast cancer tissue while leaving as much healthy breast tissue as possible. The breast preservation surgeon often works in tandem with a plastic surgeon during the surgery to provide the best possible surgical outcome related to the removal of cancerous tissue, while restoring the natural appearance of the breast. At Alaska Surgical Oncology and Alaska Breast Center, Dr. Charles Portera and Dr. Jayich work closely on breast cancer cases. Both Dr. Portera and Dr. Jayich are proficient in breast preservation surgery. The breast surgeon may involve a cosmetic surgeon for the use of breast implants to restore the original appearance along with any necessary skin grafts. The goal is to minimize the impact of the tumor removal and preserve the natural appearance of the breast where possible. Dr. Jayich is pleased to relocate back to Anchorage in 2024 where she grew up and where her parents currently live. Her father, Steven Jayich, MD, has practiced in the Anchorage medical community for more than 20 years as a pathologist. She is excited to be back in Anchorage and provide the most advanced breast preservation surgery can breast cancer treatment available in the nation to Alaskans diagnosed with breast cancer. Previously, women would have to fly to major breast centers in the Lower 48 to access a fellowship-trained breast preservation surgeon or one of the best breast cancer centers. Now these resources are provided with Alaska Surgical Oncology and its Alaska Breast Center. Dr. Jayich is on staff at Providence Alaska Medical Center and Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage. Dr. Jayich is a member of the American College of Surgeons; the American Society of Breast Surgeons; and the Society of Surgical Oncology.
