Biography: Dr. Jacob Manuel graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Texas in Austin. He then earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas at the top of his class. He completed his residency in general surgery and Orthopedic surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago's College of Medicine and was elected Chief Orthopedic resident in his final year. Dr. Manuel completed his fellowship in joint reconstruction at Cornell University's Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Working with world renowned faculty and pioneers in joint replacement there, he was elected as the most outstanding operative fellow. Dr. Manuel is a specialist in hip and knee replacement and is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He also is specifically trained in complex reconstructions and revisions of both hip and knee, computer navigated and minimally invasive techniques, hip resurfacing, and unicompartmental knee replacements with robotic assistance. He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic surgeons and a Fellow Member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.Dr. Manuel, his wife and two children enjoy living in Austin. Schmidt, M.D., received his medical degree and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where he was named the 2002 Distinguished Medical Alumnus. He completed fellowships in sports medicine and knee surgery in Sydney, Australia, and Auckland, New Zealand.Dr. Schmidt has been in private practice since 1986. He served as physician for the U.S. Olympic Festival, the World University Games in Japan, the Olympic Games in Atlanta and the NBA All-Star Game. He currently serves as the team physician for the NBA San Antonio Spurs, the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) athletics, Trinity University and many local high school. He was named the NBATA Team Physician of the Year in 2004, and was awarded the 2007 Dr. Ernst Jokl Sports Medicine Award by the United States Sports Academy. He is Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery.His interest in orthopedic surgery began during medical school when he rotated through different areas of medicine. During an emergency medicine rotation he was able to observe orthopedic surgeons take care of trauma patients with serious injuries. It was then that he decided to pursue a career in orthopedics.Dr. Simon enjoys the ability to take patients with injuries or chronic pain and make their lives better. A patient with painful arthritis in the knee can often return to a normal, pain-free life after knee replacement surgery. Those are the type of things that makes him like orthopedics.
