After growing up in Charleston, she received her undergraduate degree at Sewanee, where she served as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician with the student run service and studied Environmental Policy. Dr. Merrill returned to Charleston to attend medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina and then moved to the Midwest to complete her residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. While there, she performed research on post-operative pain management, including opioid use after surgery. As a chief resident, she received the Franklin D. Dickson Award for hard work and dedication. She then completed a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at the Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Center in Falls Church, VA, outside of Washington, DC, where she furthered her research on opioid prescribing practices. Dr. Merrill's interest in orthopaedic trauma led her to an international fellowship in lower extremity trauma in Santiago, Chile with the AO Foundation, one of the most prestigious global orthopaedic educational organizations. While there, not only did she learn about the delivery of orthopaedic care in South America, she improved her ability to speak conversational and medical Spanish. She specializes in the treatment of lower extremity fractures, sports injuries, foot and ankle deformities, and arthritis, including total ankle replacements.

Biography: This physician is accepting telehealth visits. Dr. Sarah M. Yannascoli is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hand, upper extremity, and microvascular surgery. She completed her undergraduate education at Cornell University in upstate NY, earned her medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in NYC, and completed her orthopedic surgical residency at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. She went on to complete additional fellowship training in Hand and Microsurgery at Washington University, St. Louis, MO. Dr. Yannascoli is interested in treating all conditions affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, and forearm in patients of all ages. This includes arthritis, nerve disorders and injury, acute and chronic traumatic injuries, complex wrist and elbow fractures, microsurgical repair of nerve and vascular conditions, tendonitis, and reconstruction of problems affecting the upper extremity resulting from cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, and stroke.
