Biography: Keshava Rajagopal, MD, PhD, has joined Houston Heart and HCA Houston Healthcare from the University of Texas-Houston, as a cardiac surgeon. He will direct the Gulf Coast system's surgical programs in advanced heart and lung disease. This is planned to include short-term and durable mechanical circulatory support, heart transplantation, and lung transplantation. In addition, he will be faculty member in the new College of Medicine of the University of Houston, which is clinically partnered with HCA Houston Healthcare. In this capacity, he will develop research programs in basic and translational research. Dr. Rajagopal's surgical practice encompasses a broad range of adult cardiac operations to treat the majority of adult cardiopulmonary diseases. These include: coronary artery bypass grafting, aortic valve repair and replacement, aortic root replacement, ascending thoracic aortic replacement, mitral valve replacement, pulmonary thromboembolectomy and thromboendarterectomy, ventricular assist device implantation, heart transplantation, lung transplantation, and cannulation for short-term mechanical cardiac and pulmonary support. Dr. Rajagopal received his undergraduate education at the University of Pittsburgh, with a B.S. in Chemistry. His medical and graduate education were obtained at The University of Chicago, as part of the Medical Scientist Training Program. After graduation, he undertook training in general surgery inclusive of a postdoctoral research fellowship, and in cardiothoracic surgery, at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Rajagopal then became an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland. Thereafter, he was recruited to the University of Texas-Houston to found a new lung transplant program, where he was most recently an Associate Professor. Dr. Rajagopal has won numerous academic awards at each stage in his education and training, as well as a faculty member at both the University of Maryland and the University of Texas-Houston. He is widely published and has been a funded investigator, and is a member of several academic societies.
