Biography: Qing Wang, MD, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and a clinician-scientist specializing in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma. Her surgical expertise includes cataract and both minimally invasive and traditional glaucoma surgeries. Her research focus is on understanding why retinal ganglion cells are lost in glaucoma and developing new treatments to protect and restore these cells. Dr. Wang graduated from Yale University with a BS and MS in Molecular Biophysicis and Biochemistry. She subsequently came to Columbia University where she earned her MD and PhD through the Medical Scientist Training Program. Her doctoral dissertation was on the molecular programs that distinguish different subpopulations of retinal ganglion cells during development. She went on to complete her ophthalmology residency and postdoctoral research fellowship on optic nerve regeneration at the Stein Eye Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. Before returning to Columbia, she completed a glaucoma clinical fellowship at Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Wang is a rising star in glaucoma research and has won many awards throughout her training. Clinically, she is dedicated to addressing the needs of each individual patient to protect their vision and maximize their quality of life.

Biography: Abdallah Mahrous, MD is an Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medicine and an Attending Physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in vitreo-retinal surgery, a sub-specialty focused on diseases of the posterior segment of the eye including the vitreous cavity and the retina.Dr. Mahrous completed his two-year fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York Presbyterian Hospital. During his fellowship training Dr. Mahrous gained broad clinical and surgical experience treating patients across Weill Cornell Medicine clinics, New York Presbyterian Hospitals of Weill Cornell, Lower Manhattan, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital.Prior to his fellowship training Dr. Mahrous completed a three-year ophthalmology residency also at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York Presbyterian Hospital where he gained exposure to various pathology across the New York Presbyterian Hospitals as well as Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. Dr. Mahrous also served as Chief resident in his senior year and won the prestigious Distinguished House Staff Award selectively chosen amongst the residents of New York Presbyterian Hospital for his clinical and surgical excellence.Dr. Mahrous is a graduate of Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar where he received his Medical Degree with Honors in Academic Distinction where graduated top of his class and also received the United States Medical Licensure Examination Tutor award for his teaching and mentoring of junior medical students.Dr. Mahrous' clinical and surgical interests include diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachments, retinal tears and holes, epiretinal membranes, macular holes, retinal vein occlusions and dislocated lenses amongst others. Biography: Ives "Tony" Valenzuela, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and is the Helen and Martin Kimmel Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at CUIMC. He is also an Attending Ophthalmologist at the New York Presbyterian Hospital where he serves as the Associate Director of the Ambulatory Care Network Eye Clinic. His surgical expertise includes traditional glaucoma surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, glaucoma laser surgery, and cataract surgery. Originally from Bethesda, Md., Dr. Valenzuela received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Yale University. He received his medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. After an internship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, he completed his ophthalmology residency at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center where he served as Chief Resident in his final year. He subsequently completed the Advanced Specialty Glaucoma Fellowship Training Program at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute in Baltimore, Maryland where he also served as one of the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellows for the 2022-2023 academic year. Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Valenzuela returned to Columbia as a full-time faculty member. Dr. Valenzuela's areas of research primarily focus on understanding glaucoma and glaucoma care in vulnerable populations, surgical and device innovation, and surgical instruction and ophthalmic education for resident and fellow trainees. Clinically, Dr. Valenzuela aims to form partnerships with each of his patients to best manage their glaucoma and maximize their quality of life.

Biography: Dr. Jeffrey Odel is a Professor of Ophthalmology at CUMC and specializes in the field of Neuro-Ophthalmology. Dr. Odel is active in both clinical and research arenas. His present research interest is in developing efficient clinical tools to distinguish vision loss and visual field loss of optic nerve origin from that of retinal origin. He works with Donald C. Hood, Ph. D., of the department of psychology, in a weekly conference where visual fields are correlated with multifocal electroretinography, multifocal visual evoked potentials and spectral domain optical coherence tomography. He will be addressing with Dr. Hood the most cost effective diagnostic pathway of the work-up of visual loss under different clinical scenarios.
