Biography: Recently a patient came in for her annual physical exam who had lost 120 pounds since her previous annual physical a year earlier. She credited me with motivating her and giving her the tools to start her weight loss journey. Another patient came in for her post-op appointment after having a hysterectomy for a large fibroid uterus. She no longer had heavy bleeding or pelvic pressure and was feeling more energetic and comfortable with exercise. \n I went into medicine to help girls and women with their medical problems and that's the kind of feedback that motivates me to keep learning and be the best doctor I can be for my patients. \n Whether working with patients or other health care professionals, I consider myself an educator and adviser. Though I'll take a conservative approach to treating you, I will encourage you to use all therapeutic options if I think they will help you achieve the best long-term outcome. I established the Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology at what was then called Novant Health Presbyterian Hospital in 2012 and was the first gynecologic surgeon in North Carolina to be awarded Master Surgeon by the Surgical Review Corporation, a global nonprofit patient safety organization. \n I've taught gynecologic surgeons and directed continuing medical education courses throughout the United States and Canada. In addition, I received a "Best Doctor" award from the North Carolina Business Journal, a "Top Doctor" award from both Charlotte Magazine and the Charlotte Business Journal on multiple occasions. \n After graduating from Dartmouth College, I earned a master's degree from Georgetown University before pursuing my medical education at the George Washington University School of Medicine. I served as The Academic Chief Resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology during my final year at the George Washington University Medical Center. \n I've been happily married for three decades, and my wife and I have three grown children. Biography: When Jaleema Speaks, MD, was six years old, she asked her pediatrician to let her look at her blood under the microscope because of her fascination with science. Dr. Speaks turned that love of science into a career when she decided to attend medical school. Her desire to focus on women's care was encouraged by a family of strong women, like her grandmother who taught Lamaze and yoga from her screened in porch, exposing Dr. Speaks to pregnant women very early on. Dr. Speaks never gets bored of delivering babies and believes it's the best reason to be awake in the middle of the night. When she's not working or on call, Dr. Speaks enjoys spending time with her family. She married her high school sweetheart and they have a son and a daughter.
