I am lucky to have had the opportunity to train under brilliant thinkers and exceptional role models from whom I have learned the importance of ensuring that each patient truly understands his or her diagnosis and the rationale behind treatment. I am excited to be joining the Department of Hematology at Weill Cornell and look forward to continuing in clinical investigations in hopes of improving diagnosis and treatment in the fields of thrombosis and immune thrombocytopenia. Biography: J. Gregory Mears, M.D. is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. After receiving a B.S. at Trinity College, Dr. Mears obtained an M.D. at The College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. He undertook his Internal Medicine residency at Boston University Medical Center and his Hematology-Medical Oncology fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center.Dr. Mears' early career was research based and involved studies of the molecular genetics of disorders of hemoglobin as well as chronic myelogenous leukemia. For the past 25 years Dr. Mears has maintained a clinical practice caring for people with blood disorders with an emphasis on leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and multiple myeloma. Dr. Mears has a strong clinical interest in women with breast cancer and is the Medical Director of the OctoberWoman Foundation.Additionally, Dr. Mears is pursuing clinical research in the fields of Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma as well as breast cancer. He is also actively engaged in the teaching of medical students, residents and fellows.

Care Philosophy: I have been Service Chief of the BenignHematology Service in the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology since 2006. As a clinician, my main interest is in the care of patients with thrombotic and bleeding disorders. As a researcher who conducts clinical trials in Benign Hematology, my interest is in thrombosis and hemostasis, specifically thrombophilic disorders and women's health issues. It is my hope that through dedication to the care of each individual patient, and dedication to research that will ultimately improve that care, we will meet our overall mission of helping our patients to have a better quality of life.

Biography: Pinkal Desai MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and Assistant Attending Physician at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital.After obtaining her MBBS at Byramjeejeebhoy Medical College in India in 2005, Dr. Desai obtained an MPH at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health. Following her residency at Wayne State University, Detroit Medical Center, she underwent fellowship training in Hematology-Medical Oncology at Providence Hospital Medical Center, serving as Chief Fellow from 2012-2013. Dr. Desai was recruited to serve in our Leukemia Program to develop a clinical practice devoted to leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). She will be developing clinical and translational research protocols and projects in the areas of leukemia, MDS and MPN.Dr. Desai is published in Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers Prevention and International Journal of Molecular Epidemiology and Genetics. She is the lead author and co-author on numerous WHI (Women's Health Initiative) paper proposals and has presented abstracts at national meetings. She is a member of American Society of Hematology (ASH) and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and has served on the ASCO University Committee.
