Biography: Dr. Devin Watson is a board-certified and fellowship-trained vascular surgeon, providing vascular care to patients in Salem, Virginia, and the surrounding community.He grew up in Oxford, North Carolina, and obtained his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. During his undergraduate years, Dr. Watson spent most of his spare time paddling, fishing, and hiking around Roanoke, Botetourt, and Nelson counties. He attended The George Washington University in Washington, DC, on a USAF HPSP scholarship and completed his residency in general surgery at San Antonio Military Medical Center (formerly Brooke Army Medical Center) at Joint Base in San Antonio, Texas. He then completed a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland.Prior to joining the team at LewisGale, Dr. Watson spent 14 years on active duty in the US Air Force. He served as the Vascular Lab Medical Director at Travis AFB in addition to being a faculty member for the integrated vascular surgery residency program with UC Davis Medical Center. He then served as the Chief of Vascular Surgery at Keesler AFB where he built the busiest open aortic program in the Department of Defense. Most recently he was the Mission Commander and Medical Director for a USAF humanitarian mission to St Lucia. He continues to serve in the USAF Reserves.Dr. Watson has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and delivered many national and international lectures on vascular surgery. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery. Additionally, he is a fellow of both the Society for Vascular Surgery (FSVS) and the American College of Surgeons (FACS).Dr. Watson specializes in all aspects of vascular surgery care; however, he is most passionate about limb salvage (surgeries and interventions to avoid lower extremity amputations). He has extensive experience in both traditional open vascular procedures as well as less invasive endovascular and hybrid procedures. He also enjoys performing stroke risk-reduction procedures such as carotid endarterectomy, TCAR, and transfemoral carotid stenting. Dr. Watson believes there is rarely a "one-size fits all" solution to complex problems and that care must be individualized. Strong working relationships between patient, surgeon, and nursing staff are critical to obtaining optimal health outcomes.Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Watson enjoys watching his daughters compete in gymnastics, cooking with his wife, and any number of outdoor activities from ultra-light backpacking to free-dive spearfishing.
