Biography: Alan Swenson, MD was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska and he is happy to be back home, providing care to his fellow Alaskans. He is a fellowship trained hand and microvascular surgeon. He pursued this specialty for its complexity and the depth and breadth of the field. Dr. Swenson says the best part of his job, though, ``is getting people back to the lives and activities they love.`` He is also an ardent supporter of community and medical education. He believes that the better educated patients and providers are, the better they can work together to achieve their shared goals. Growing up in Anchorage, Dr. Swenson was a stand out at both Stellar Secondary School and the Alaska Pacific University Early Honors program. He earned his Eagle Scout and went on to study biology at Brigham Young University–Hawaii, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He later attended the Alaska WWAMI program and earned his doctorate of medicine, with AOA Honors, from the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Swenson chose to remain in Washington to complete a 5 year orthopedic surgery residency program focusing on trauma and disorders of the musculoskeletal system. There he was able to train at numerous institutions, including the world famous Harborview Medical Center, under some of the most respected orthopedic surgeons of their field. Dr. Swenson excelled in his residency training and was selected to complete a surgical fellowship in hand and microvascular surgery at the University of Cincinnati. There he spent an entire year focusing solely on disorders of the hand and upper extremity under the renowned hand surgeon, Peter Stern, MD. Since finishing his formal training, Dr. Swenson has continued his academic pursuits. He continues to be involved in cutting edge research at both the University of Cincinnati and the University of Washington. He is also passionate about both patient and provider education. He has recently taken on the role of Medical Director of Continuing Medical Education for the Providence Alaska system and acts as a preceptor to medical students, physician assistants, and medical residents. Dr. Swenson continuously works to ensure that all patients in Alaska will have access to the most up to date treatments and care available. Biography: Dr. Jared Kern was born in Colorado, and raised through out the US. He is an avid runner, and enjoys the outdoors. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in photography, and subsequently went on to study podiatry, graduating from Des Moines University, as a doctor of podiatric medicine in 2005. After graduation from medical school Dr. Kern underwent comprehensive training in conservative and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle at the Encino Tarzana Regional Medical Center Podiatric Residency Program in Los Angeles. Following residency Dr. Kern started practice in 2008 in Southwest Washington state, in Olympia and Centralia. Living in Alaska has been a dream of his for many years. Biography: Born and raised in Montana, Dr. Jennifer R. Jansma graduated from Billings West High School in 1991. Inspired to "see the world", Dr. Jansma headed West to Forest Grove, Oregon where she attended Pacific University and completed a degree in Medical Technology at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. Prior to entering Podiatric Medical School at California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco in 1998, Dr. Jansma ventured further and worked as a general Medical Technologist at the North Hawaiian Community Hospital in Kamuela, Hawaii. In 2002, Dr. Jansma was accepted into the University of Texas Health Science Residency in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at San Antonio, Texas where she completed a year focusing on Diabetes, Peripheral Vascular Disease and limb salvage. Dr. Jansma then completed a 24 month Podiatric Surgical Residency at Scott & White Hospital, affiliate of Texas A&M, in Temple, Texas in June of 2005. Then in October and November of that same year, she completed a 2 month AO Orthopedic Trauma Fellowship in Mainz, Germany. Biography: Dr. Rabun Fox is a fellowship-trained foot and ankle surgeon who treats a wide variety of orthopedic foot and ankle conditions. He helps guide patients first through non-surgical treatment plans and then, if necessary, surgical solutions that are minimally invasive whenever possible. Biography: Born and raised in Alaska, Dr. Matt A. Heilala attended Soldotna High School and graduated in 1988. Dr. Heilala was a commercial fisherman for many years in his families small business. Although he enjoyed this aspect of his life, it was clear that this was not the direction for him. Having personally undergone foot surgery and having an uncle in Michigan who was a foot doctor, Dr. Heilala became interested in the world of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery early on. Dr. Heilala's formal undergraduate education began at the University of Oregon and was completed at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1991. Dr. Heilala then entered Podiatric Medical School at the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, where he graduated Valedictorian and Summa Cum Laude in 1995. That same year Dr. Heilala was accepted into the Northern Virginia Podiatric Residency Program, considered one of the top Surgical Foot and Ankle residencies in the Nation. He additionally received Plastic Surgical Training in lower extremity reconstructive and limb salvage surgery at Georgetown University Hospital under the direction of one of worlds foremost experts. After completing his residency in 1998, Dr. Heilala and his family moved back to their home of Alaska where he is currently in private practice at AFAS. Dr. Heilala has written research articles for The Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery and has given many lectures on these topics Nationally.

Biography: Dr. Haughom is a fellowship-trained hip and knee surgeon, focusing on complex hip & knee reconstructions as well as total hip and knee replacements. He and his wife came to Alaska in 2017 and knew immediately it would be the place they would make their home. In November of 2020, he took the opportunity to join OPA and today is a vital member of its joint replacement team.
