Refuses to take session notes despite NYS law to do so to ensure continuity of care - I noticed that questions & issues that I discussed at nauseam weeks earlier were being repeated- when I shared my concerns about this, this provider got extremely defensive and nasty. She said, “Whether I take notes or not is my business...and I have a very good memory, do I don’t need to.” - Plus, she began our last session discussing insurance and payment matters, which lasted for nearly 45 min of the session - when I asked her if we could save summative payment conversation until after the therapy session, she said that discussing payment was a part of therapy - I ended the therapy and feel like I need therapy for the therapy I had!

I began seeing Dr. Kabat 5 months ago to deal with a crisis. She helped me with some of it, but here’s the issue: Symbiotic with my crisis were other areas I had to tackle. I began noticing that, although Dr. K can recall select granular info (ex: friends’ names), she began broaching topics I had discussed in detail weeks earlier as if they’d never been discussed. When I asked her if she regularly referred to her session notes prior to us meeting, she became extremely defensive & hostile. She said, “No. I don’t take notes” and that she doesn’t have to because “I have a very good memory.” When I explained that session notes, like any medical record, are vital in prescribing care/goal-setting, & follow-up, she snapped at me & said, “Whether I take notes or not is my business.” She wasn’t aware that I used to supervise clinical SWs & know that under NYS law, session notes ARE my business & must be taken/kept & available if requested by a new therapist to ensure continuity of care.
