Emotionally disconnected; empathy gap
Dr. Haynes calls himself a "confrontational therapist," and this approach was harmful to me. He pushed topics that I told him I didn't want to talk about and didn't respect my boundaries. He often played devil's advocate by debating me on behalf of people who had hurt me, which re-traumatized me. He was unwilling to adapt his approach and did not seem aware of how his it was affecting me (emotionally disconnected). He was also incredibly hard-set in his diagnoses of me, which felt suffocating and demeaning. When I tried to disagree with the way he was defining me, he scoffed at me and was incredibly dismissive. My perspective was not valued. He patronized me about personal responsibility, but blamed me for "resisting [his] treatment" instead of questioning whether it was actually beneficial. He's a very proud man, I felt somehow beneath him during the sessions. He did not help me with my self-worth issues, he made it worse, and he seemed distracted and irritated during the sessions.

I have worked with Dr. Haynes for over a year now. I have struggled with issues of depression and self-worth for most of my life. Dr. Haynes is an extraordinarily genuine and empathetic therapist. Working with him has been quite an enlightening experience and I am in a much better place than where I was a year ago. I feel very fortunate for having him.
