Kellie Trepton's lack of communication created unnecessary conflict and negatively impacted the care of our family member during a mental health crisis. Before admission, we were assured we could share critical information. When we requested to speak with the treating physician, we were repeatedly told over a 72-hour period that she was “too busy” to engage with us. Eventually, we were informed she would not accept any information from us, citing a supposed HIPAA violation. This claim is incorrect, HIPAA explicitly permits family members to share information with providers. Despite escalating our concerns to a supervisor and patient advocate, it was only after further intervention that she either left or was removed from the care team. This experience was deeply troubling, and we remain appalled by the lack of accountability and transparency from UnityPoint Meriter in Madison, WI. To date, we have not received any explanation for this behavior, raising concerns for standard of care.
