It does not surprise me to see diverging accounts here. Ed Emery is a smart guy and can be very kind and patient. He also can be manipulative and abusive. In my case, he convinced me that going over the same thing not just once but again, and again, and again was a good thing when, in fact, it became an endless process of involution that kept me stuck and dependent and shelling out money for years. (Two experienced and competent therapists, one of whom knows him, later helped me see just how bad it was, clinically and ethically.) When I eventually decided to take a temporary break--in no small part because I'd used up all my savings--it got really bizarre. He claimed that I had broken the “sacred therapeutic container” and went off the rails. Literally red in the face, “No one does this to me!” Then he tried to gaslight me, claiming that the problem was my “refusal to accept care.” It was far and away the weirdest and most disturbing interaction I've ever had. Really, stay away.

My experience with Dr Emery was very negative. I found him to be disingenuous and very thoughtless at times. He seemed to enjoy my pain and did not seem to really care about my person. I would not recommend him to anyone. There are therapists out there with narcissistic qualities and I found that to be the case with him.

I saw Dr. Emery for about 2 years, after having tried several other therapists. He is brilliant, helpful and wise. He doesn't give you advice so much as lead you through a gentle growth process.

I was in therapy with Dr. Emery for about 3 years. He was incredible and helped me through some tough times. He is so smart and an outstanding, excellent therapist. He remembers everything, and helped me see what I needed to see. Not pushy, just supportive. And helpful. I recommend him without any hesitation. I can't imagine a better therapist. One of the smartest and kindest people I have ever met.

My experiences with Dr. Emery are diametrically opposed to the above review. I have seen a myriad of therapists over my life time (too many) and so many have been so incompetent! I find Dr. Emery to be very intelligent and very kind (caring). He has helped me more than any other therapist. Of course, it must feel like a good match.
