I came across Amanda's profile on Psychology Today. She was listed as a provider, confirmed she accepted my insurance, and scheduled an appointment about 3 weeks out. The week of the appointment, she emailed me to say her private practice was not yet set up to accept my insurance so she would be cancelling the appointment. She did not offer a referral beyond another internet search or local outpatient clinic. I understand that establishing a private practice can be stressful and confusing, but the lack of organization was disappointing. It would have been more helpful and more professional for her to directly recommend a colleague from the clinic - even better if she'd gone to said colleague and asked to make a referral - instead of just naming clinics and organizations to call. It also would have been more appropriate to deliver this news via phone. Perhaps her counseling skills are adequate, but her practice management skills are certainly lacking.
