Dr. William Nelson, MD

I was referred to Dr Nelson by Dr Sciullo due to this was the second time having a hernia repaired and that he specializes in robotic arm repair. Dr Nelson and the AHN have a very good process system all the way from per-op administration to post-op home care. About a week before my surgery was scheduled I was getting cold feet and had questions. Dr Nelson called me back within minutes and answered all my questions. Instructions how to navigate the hospital were clear and my wife and I checked in very smoothly. The Allegheny Health Network take security very seriously and you will need to check in before going to registration. I was provided a timeline to arrive and when the procedure would begin, they were spot on. We arrived at 8:05 as requested and i was wheeled into the OR at 9:35 as they estimated. The pre-op team was top notch, they prepped me with zero wait time. Post-op the Doctor informed my wife how the surgery went while I was in recovery. Great Experience.

Avoid Dr. Nelson. I am over two years post-surgery and I am still dealing with a partially open wound. I had a lot of drainage following surgery at just 22 years old. I continuously made him aware of the drainage and after months of complaining, he finally recommended a wound clinic. However, both AGH and UPMC wound clinic were inadequate and UPMC eventually gave my a chemical burn around my wound with silver nitrate. Just an awful experience overall.

He didn't seem to care about my condition, but he did recommend expensive testing with no follow up.

I would not recommend Dr. Nelson at West Penn Hospital. Awful follow up care. Unable to reach appropriate staff when experiencing post surgery complications from Dr. Nelson. I’m a young healthy male and he was reckless is his approach. Do Not Use this surgeon. I’m still having issues months later.
