Knowledgeable, but dismissive
Dr. Xu was informative and took time to answer all of my questions on my first visit. After receiving the suggested spinal injection, I followed-up with a second appointment to discuss results (as I hadn't received much pain relief). While he did maintain professionality, I was put aback by his unwillingness to look at alternatives. He told me my condition was simply something I had to cope with and that he treats many other patients with far more severe conditions. I had to push for alternative suggestions for pain management, to which he responded with a suggestion or two that felt as though he was grasping at straws to simply wrap the conversation so he could get to his next patient. The whole experience was a perfect example of patient dismissiveness.Long story short: the staff is great and very responsive. Dr. Xu is knowledgeable and skilled, but is unwilling to really delve into patient care. Just another example of how patients are being treated more like numbers than people.

Competent- lacks compassion around patients pain
He for some reason would not give me the testing 2x or actual nerve oblation on neck with somethone to keep me going thru horrible pain and experience during the procedures. He was very non-caring about any pain I might endure and did procedures without any pain managment. The Oblation to my neck lasted 3 years which was fantastic.I just wne thru the required 2 test ie nerve blocks with a Chattanooga Doctor that used light sedation so I wouldn't have pain associated with the nerve block process and it was so pleasant of an experience. Contrasting with DR. Xu at Piedmont, I felt no unessary pain like at Piedmont. Dr. Xu process felt like he was driving railroad spikes into my neck all 3 times he worked on my Oblation process--totally unessary pain and tramatic to my body. No wonder people don't use this treatment more !!!Just thankful it gave me 3 years with pain improvment..some would say small price to pay, however, still tramatic process and folks enduring barbaric pain durin

Dismissive of patients needs
Dr Xu refuses to fill out paperwork for patients for Fmla, or accomodations, or disability so that they can get approved for these types of assistance. He is very dismissive of your pain.

I felt very involved in my care. Dr. Xu explained my situation and options. He also was kind enough to sit and go over my MRI with me and it was the first time I was able to really understand what was happening.

Didn't listen to my concerns at all, nor did he look at my MRIs I provided. I told him what my neurosurgeon and neurologist said, and he quickly dismissed them even though they've been treating me for almost a year at this point. I don't understand why he thought he knew my pain better than myself. I then went to see another specialist who immediately agreed with my surgeon and neurologist and helped me relieve my pain instantly. Pain shouldn't solely be measured on how painful it is, but also on functionality. It's not like I was asking for pain killers... I was there on a referral from my neurosurgeon to try a more conservative treatment before trying surgery since I still cannot do every day functions such as sitting, laying down, driving, cleaning, etc without complete numbness in my limbs later.

He only treats the spine, do not waste your time with anything else. The Dr's website says: "Dr. Xu treats...musculoskeletal conditions (muscle pain, tendinopathy, and joint pain), along with many other conditions..." However he said that he could not see me even thought my condition was related to muscle inflammation. So they are lying in the description. Very sad cause I wanted a rehabilitation approach for my pain. Cost me the $45 to get there in a lyft cause I cannot drive because the pain.

Dr. Thomas Xu is the perfect example of modern medicine’s systematic failure to offer agile and effective care. I have a slipped disc in my lower back causing sciatic. I have an MRI showing this that I brought into Dr. Xu. It was around a year and a half old. Before given me a cortisone shot for pain, he wanted a second one. I asked why and he said “because it could be something else there causing the pain and discomfort, like cancer”. I responded that I felt that was extremely unlikely, as my symptoms shown in the MRI I presented were quite clear, and the pain I had today was consistent with what I had back then, and that it instead being a new cancer growth over the past year is so unlikely that I found it quite comical that he would suggest that. Nevertheless, he said it was necessary. I called his office twice more after learning that a new MRI would be $1,000. I explained to them that I could not afford this and I really needed a shot in my back for pain management. Both times
