Dr. Thomas Heffernan, MD

Dr Heffernan was kinda detached and not interested since I was moving away from this area soon. I still needed his help because he was the first doc I saw who read my scan and gave me a cancer diagnosis. To seem uncaring did not feel good. Also, I went to Johns Hopkins and saw an OBGYN oncologist who said his diagnosis of ovarian cancer was not accurate. She 99% confident it was a completely different type and recommended treatment for the cancer type she and the Hopkins radiologist felt was accurate. Had I followed Dr Heffernan’s treatment I’d have had a complete hysterectomy that was unnecessary. The Hopkins doc said no surgery would adequately treat my situation. I assume Dr Heffernan acted in good faith but I am glad I got a second opinion (the OBGYN oncologist I started with had me go to Hopkins for a second opinion; she also doubted Dr H’s diagnosis).

When my OB-GYN tried to complete my hysterectomy which included an enlarged uterus overtaken by fibroids she wasn't comfortable completing the procedure due to her concern for cancer and potentially damaging other organs. I was referred to another Gyn Onc whom I was not comfortable with but knew I wanted a Gynecological Oncologist to complete the surgery and thankfully then was referred to Dr. Heffernan. After completing an MRI for further study, he recently completed my surgery with the Da Vinci robotic procedure and I could not be happier with the results or my experience. His bedside manner and care for his patients and assuring you that he will do what is safest for you and the reassurance from the nurses and staff completely put me at ease. Thankfully my case was just complicated and not cancerous. My recovery time and scars have been better than expected and he reviewed everything with me again at the post op appointment. I live in a medium size north Texas city and was diagnosed with primary peritoneal cancer. The lab report suggested ovarian origin. My local oncologist started me on chemo and said surgery was not an option. After the third chemo treatment my husband and I decided to get a second opinion and we ended up in Dr. Heffernan's office in Plano. He ordered labs and a CT scan and told me that surgery was an option. He scheduled me for surgery at Medical City Plano on a Wednesday and I was discharged on Friday after major surgery. I recovered quickly and he started chemo again. After another three rounds of chemo my scan showed no signs of cancer. Since ovarian cancer nearly always returns he wrote a script for a once daily chemo pill. When my insurance denied the prescription his staff appealed and my insurance reversed their decision and approved the medication. I am doing well thanks to Dr. Heffernan and his team. My life is back to normal and I would recommend him to anyone.

He save my life, God guide me to see him, and I believe everything happen for a reason, he explain my problem very understandable, vey kind and he is very helpful, my procedure is very peaceful, no pain, very comfortable, all the staff is very awesome they are always beside you to make sure I am safe and comfortable. Dr Heffernan came highly recommended by a Dr friend as one of the best robotic gyn surgeons in the country, and he did not disappoint. My first opinion @ UTSW said there was a 50% chance my hysterectomy would require a very large abdominal vertical cut, but Dr Heffernan accomplished my surgery robotically with two tiny horizontal vertical cuts in a one hour surgery. He has the confidence in his skills you need to feel comfortable in a cancer situation paired with the humility and patience to answer the questions you have with communication you can understand. He always referred to facts from clinical studies to support our treatment path and remembered specifics from our previous conversations, which gave me total peace of mind. I feel so blessed to have had his help through a trying time, and am forever grateful for his care.

This man is God sent! Thank you for performing my Hysterectomy but also being extremely supportive and caring during the process.

Dr. Heffernan is the absolute best!! I have seen many OBGYNs and reproductive endocrinologists and the majority were rude and traumatizing. When I got my diagnosis, precancerous cells in my uterus, I was referred to Dr. Heffernan and extremely anxious to see yet another doctor. Dr. Heffernan has been the most caring, intuitive, and supportive doctor. When it came time to my surgery, he helped ease my fears and anxiety and addressed both my husband and I. His staff is sweet and they seem to truly care about your well being.

Dr. Heffernan was AMAZING. I had to have a full hysterectomy at the age of 39 and he was very thorough explaining the procedure and my life moving forward with hormones. My surgery went smoothly and I'm so thankful he was my doctor. You're in the best hands if he handles your procedure.

I had the best care and experience provided by Dr. Heffernan. While he primarily treats women with cancer, he did something entirely different for me. We tragically lost our son in March 2020 due to cervical incompetence. At 24 weeks, my cervix failed causing a uterine infection and premature delivery. Dr. Heffernan compassionately listened to my experience and was able to offer a treatment to hopefully prevent this situation from occurring in a subsequent pregnancy. He placed a robotic laparoscopic transabdominal cerclage (Robo Lap TAC) that provides a better support to my cervix than traditionally-placed vaginal cerclages. He has had excellent success rates with this procedure. The surgery was seamless, and I had little to no pain afterward. I was back to my normal self the very next day. I am so appreciative of his kindness, compassion, and expertise that gives us hope to bring another child home to our family.

Dr. Heffernan and his surgery team at Medical City Plano were fantastic! I am 50 years old and 2 weeks post surgery and haven't felt this good in 15 years. I had a robotic radical hysterectomy to remove stage 4 endometriosis that was all over several organs, fortunately, it did not turn out to be cancerous. Dr. Heffernan is an artist and his skill with the Da Vinci robot is just another example of his art, with precision and detail. Due to covid-19 our first 2 visits were by phone prior to surgery. Even by phone, Dr. Heffernan was very patient and thoroughly answered all of my questions. I am so blessed to have been referred to Dr. Heffernan.

Today i had my first appointment with Dr.Heffernan' i was referred to him by my obgyn due to my health circumstances. He is very personable and professional & thourogh. I really like him and so glad i was referred to him by my wonderful obgyn that i trust immensely. I also want to add that cindy and his nurses are very sweet and welcoming. I was nervous about my appointment' but that has lifted and now i feel relaxed and ready to take care of my health and follow the direction and expertise of Dr.Heffernan.

After having multiple OB challenges (ovarian cysts, fibroid tumors, stage 4 endometriosis, abnormal cervical cells & infertility) and undergoing two prior OB surgeries, I was referred to Dr Heffernan to perform a robotic hysterectomy. Dr. Heffernan specializes in complex cases, is extremely bright and well respected by other physicians. He walked me through my options and the process. My surgery and recovery was a piece of cake thanks to his clinical competency and the medical team he has around him. I woke up from surgery feeling great and my recovery was simple. One of the best decisions in my life was to have a full robotic assist hysterectomy by Dr. Heffernan. He’s a phenomenal surgeon and I am grateful to have him in the DFW area. My only wish is I would have been referred to and met him sooner.

I was referred to Dr. Heffernan and I was having severe abdominal pain for months before this. Dr. Heffernan listened and made a decision on what needed to be done. Dr. Thomas Heffernan saved my life. I cannot say more posative things about this man and how wonderful he is as a doctor and a person. I was in a position where I had no way of getting medical treatment for a huge sist on my ovairy and had been in constant pain. I was misarable for years and did not know what to do or where to turn. In the past I had had a couple of treatments and surgery for the same issues with no posative outcome, but more pain that would just return and increase. Dr. Heffernan was the only person and still is the only person I trust to help me get better, my trust In doctors was ultametly destroyed due to horrible past experiences. Dr. Heffernan is the best ever!!! Cancer is scary, Dr. Heffernan has made me feel so secure and informed along my 3 year journey. He has an amazing bedside manner, serious when he needs to be but knows when to keep it light. He is patient during my time with him and never rushed to answer any of my questions (even if it is silly or not).
