A Doctor who finally sees me
I saw Dr. Yacoubian at UAB Ataxia Center in Birmingham, AL. My Variant of SCA35 is a VUS with a high REVEL. Based on this, my family history, and clinical presentation - she felt the SCA35 fit. I was always told by past neurologist (and the radiology report) that my MRIs were normal. Dr. Yacoubian reviewed my MRI disc (I had a copy), and found issues that no one has ever saw atrophy etc. She was kind, listened to me, and was empathetic with my frustrations. I have seen at least 6 neurologist even one at UTSA Medical Center.Additionally, I also loved that Dr. Kandil (a Fellow with her) stated that - 'your disease is not really known because it is so rare, there is no text book to compare you to.' This made me feel seen and heard. So many providers have tried to put me into a textbook and the best I have gotten was 'atypical Early Onset Parkinson's.'I am so thankful to be taken seriously, and now, I have hope for my children and grandchildren that may be affected.

Not only is Dr. Yacoubian a great doctor, she is also very nice. She is very knowledgeable about Dystonia, and I feel that I receive the best care with her. It is very hard to get in to see her, but it is worth the wait!!!
