Dr Shafa is always very caring and clear. The resident did a great job, but with Dr Shafa, you can really tell what years of experience does for one's bedside manner.

The doctor was very pleasant and clearly intended to be helpful. But, we barely had time to really flesh out my issues and for him to make a truly informed decision on whether to go forward. He was good In the time we had, but It seemed rushed and no real connection was made. Only at the end when I by chance added more detail did he come to a clearer conclusion. I felt more time should have been taken to really understand my condition completely since the procedure I am supposed to go may or may not be useful and may or may not be a good use of my time and money.

Dr Shafa's office, and Georgetown, look to game the system with insurance reimbursements to turn regular/ preventative colonoscopies (which patients often have less or no financial responsibility for under their insurance plan) into claims that require significant out of pocket spending by the patient. In my case they identified a minor complaint I was having during my intake and coded it to get this level of reimbursement. I find this shady and a disincentive to be open with my provider let alone seek such preventative care in the first place.

Beware!
Dr. Shafa and the team at Georgetown gamed my insurance reimbursement to turn what was intended as a routine preventative colonoscopy (with $0 out of pocket on my part) into a Diagnostic/ Medical event that will cost me $2400 out of pocket. Their 'pre-screening' took a fairly pedestrian symptom I was having and attached a diagnostic code to it that then deserved higher payment from my insurance company for the procedure. With this I had to pay 25% of total cost vs. $0 from the intent - a preventative routine procedure. This disincentives people from seeking preventative care and disincentives people from describing their symptoms honestly. Shady work on the part of MedStar (and apparently not surprising given other feedback I hear) and an example of how broken our healthcare system is.

Doctor Shervin Shafa is, without question, an exceptional man and an equally excellent Doctor of Gastroenterology. Doctor Shafa has demonstrated that he does not "go through the motions" at being the best in his field. Rather, with me, he became deeply involved in my case and and went to work at improving my quality of life. Dr Shafa made sure that when I needed a specialist, he would recommend one he trusted. For me, Dr Shervin Shafa is building relationships on solid ground, one at a time.

Dr. Shafa realized a few minutes into our consult that I needed to be seen urgently in a different clinic; he moved mountains, called in favors, and phoned friends in order to get me the care that I needed within the time available. He is a fantastic doctor, truly cares about the welfare of his patients, and I would 100% recommend him to anyone in need of his services.
