Dr. Shawn Chen, MD

Dr. Chen has cared for my 87-year-old mother for about two and a half years in a memory care facility. My mother loves his visits and reports that he is “kind and funny”. I appreciate the wealth of knowledge he brings to caring for geriatric-dementia patients. Dr. Chen always responds to phone calls and explains various treatment options while outlining the pros and cons of each. He takes his time with my mom as well as when talking with me so that I am able to have all my questions answered and not feel rushed. I am thankful for Dr. Chen!

I am very pleased with the care offered by Dr. Chen. My mother is in assisted living and Dr. Chen visits her at the facility. He is always very patient and he takes the time to explain things so that my 87 year old mom understands and is involved in her healthcare decisions. He never dismisses her medical complaints or tells her that there is nothing that he can do. He goes beyond what most physicians, in my experience, would do to care for her. After Dr. Chen sees my mother, I receive a call from him to discuss his visit with her. This is comforting to me because I always know what’s happening with my mother and what he is doing to assist her. Anytime that I have a concern about something going on with my mom and it's between times for him to see her, he's only a phone call away. I always receive a call back the same day. Truly, my mom's health has improved drastically after coming under his care. I highly recommend Dr. Chen as an internist and geriatric specialist.

Dr Shawn Chen is a compassionate and kind Doctor. He took wonderful care of my late Mother (96) for 2 years and coordinated her Hospice care at the end of her life. He now cares for my sister with dementia and has been her Doctor for over four years. He is a great communicator and always follows up with me regarding her care. He is always very open and honest.

Dr. Chen was my 90 year old mother's doctor in memory care at The Watermark at Southpark Meadows. Every declining step, which lasted a bit over a year and a half, Dr. Chen was able to dial in and treat accordingly even with heart complications and dementia. My family feel extremely grateful to have had such an experienced and caring doctor.

Dr. Chen has cared for my 90 plus year old mother for almost 6 years. He is very caring and thorough in his care. He is very knowledgeable about geriatric people and how different medications effect them. I love that he always involves me, her daughter, in her care and explains what her treatment will be and why and that he always takes her age into account when prescribing a treatment and medications. I highly recommend Dr. Chen!!!

Dr. Chen took care of my mom for 2.5 years. He was very attentive, knowledgeable but most of all, very caring. He understood her needs right away but aside his doctoral expertise he was very kind to me as well. I will be always grateful for the care and love dispensed by Dr. Chen.

My husband and I lived at Watermark Assisted Living and I was very pleased to have a Dr. that would visit us (and not a physician assistant). Dr. Chen was always patient in answering my questions whether it was on a visit to us or if I stopped him in the hallway - he made time to answer and put my mind at ease.His explanations whether about what was happening or the drugs being prescribed were always given so that I could understand - I never felt he talked down to me but rather took the time to explain so I knew the why and what and how.He also was mindful of my circumstances and checked on my “stress level”.I also appreciated that he interacted with the home health nurses expediently and I was kept aware of what was happening.I would recommend Dr. Shawn Chen to any senior - he truly cares for his patients.

Shawn Chen is a very attentive and knowledgeable doctor, uniquely able to tune into his elderly patients. My mother was his in his care for about a year and a half upon her move into Belmont Village and he took over her care with great compassion and a boundless energy for serving many of the residents there. He was always pleasant and able to relate to my mom and to me. If I called with any concerns, he would look in on her immediately and call me with his assessments and suggestions. It was quite a relief for me to be able to turn over her complete medical care to Dr. Chen (other than needing a specialist for her macular degeneration) and gave me great confidence and sense of relief that she was in good hands. I would recommend him implicitly!

As the spouse of an assisted living resident, I have been consistently impressed with Dr. Chen’s knowledge, compassion, professionalism, and ongoing communication. Considering my spouse’s multiple medical issues, when my spouse moved to assisted living, Dr. Chen made the process of securing a new physician seamless. Dr. Chen coordinated care with other specialists, streamlined my spouse’s medications, he has suggested and implemented clinically appropriate changes, and has consistently communicated with me regarding my spouse’s diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Chen has been an invaluable support to me during this entire process. We are 1.5 years into this journey; I truly believe I would not be where I am today without Dr. Chen’s expertise, guidance, and support. If you or a loved one are making the transition from living at home to a senior living facility (independent, assisted living, or memory care), ask if Dr. Chen is available; you will be so glad you did!

Dr. Chen cared for my mother, Judy Day, at Belmont Village from the time she moved there in January of 2023 until her death in September of 2024. He has a great bedside manner and was always cheerful and happy to see my mother. Dr. Chen had my mother’s best interest at heart, and had a genuine compassion for what I was going through (as her daughter) as well as what my mother was experiencing with her declining health and her dementia. He was considerate of every detail of my concerns for my mother’s health, no matter how small. Every time he visited my mother, he would call me to keep me posted on her ongoing care and he always had plenty of time for all my questions and concerns. He has called to check on me several times since my mother’s death less than a month ago. Dr. Chen goes above and beyond the call of duty for his patients and their families.

Dr. Shawn Chen has cared for my 89 year old father for over a year. When my father JWM entered the LTC facility, he was malnourished with uncontrolled bipolar & lots of other healthcare issues related to those conditions. Thanks to Dr. Chen’s care and follow through of his medical directions at the LTC facility , JWM is now healthier than he’s been in many years; living a full life in assisted living. Dr. Chen communicates so well with JWM (his patient) and me ( family member). Dr. Chen explains his concerns and listens to mine to make the best treatment plan for JWM. He makes sure his directives are communicated to the LTC medical team too. Dr. Chen is quick to respond to urgent medical requests like new RX filling, etc. He even solved some wound care needs while navigating the inadequacies of my father’s Medicare Advantage Plan. I cannot think of another doctor I would recommend as highly as Dr. Chen!

Excellent experience. Was introduced to Dr. Chen and his practice upon moving my dad into Belmont from out of town. Chose to enlist his services after hearing his good reputation. Changed from a Medicare Advantage program, to Medicare supplemental. Dr. Chen regularly checked on my dad, called to ask me what I experienced, and reviewed his findings. Medication review and appropriate adjustments made. Written reports available via his portal.He demonstrated a servant's heart as he cared for my dad at Belmont through to the end including on that final day.I am appreciative of his care and professionalism, and highly recommend him and his care.

Dr. Chen treated my 91 year old mother for 2 and a half years in her assisted living facility. She was very ill during her last 6 months. He visited her monthly, and treated her many illnesses. If I called him, he usually responded within 5 minutes! Sometimes he called me before I had a chance to call him. At one point she got depressed and sort of gave up, but he changed up her meds and got her back up and moving. He is old school and he makes house assisted living calls! She passed away recently and we are truly grateful for him!

Dr. Chen provided my aging mother with exceptional care for 4 years at a Senior Community in Austin. His loyalty to his patients and their families was unparalleled. He often called us after hours to follow up and offer support.Upon my Moms passing he reached out to our family and shared his fond memories of time spent caring for our Mother.I couldn't have asked for a better health care provider!

My first interaction with Dr. Chen was the day we moved Mom to an assisted living facility. His compasson, professionalism, and breadth of knowlegde immediately impressed me. His constant attention to and care of Mom continues to be excellent and she continually tells me that he is the best doctor. Dr. Chen brings a trust and warmth to his patients that makes them feel safe. When I call with a question, he responds immediately. Similarly, he notifies me and dicusses any suggestions he has for medication adjustments. Dr. Chen brings the unique combination of medical experience, kindness, empathey to patients in his care.

One year ago my father was living 1500 miles away from me in an assisted living facility. He was in very poor health and he had been in the hospital (plus rehab) a few times. I could never get in touch with his doctor and became really concerned about his health and level of care, so I moved him to an ALF near me. That's when Dr. Chen entered the picture.He is a breath of fresh air! He takes such good care of my father and is an excellent communicator. Any time I've needed to call Dr. Chen (day or night) he calls me right back. He always calls me after a visit with my dad. He explains everything asks how I think my dad is doing. He listens to both me and my dad and takes action where needed. One year ago my father's health was so poor, I thought we wouldn't have much time left with him. Now? He's lost weight, his labs have improved greatly and he is always in the best mood! I feel like we might have 10 more years with him. Let's clone Dr. Chen!

Dr. Chen cared for our mom during the last year of her battle with Alzheimer's. He was so good with her - she loved him. And I really appreciated how thorough and knowledgable he is about dementia and its related conditions. There are so many hard decisions that families have to make, and Dr. Chen always explained the various options and their pros and cons. We felt very much like we were all on the same team with Dr. Chen and Mom's facility. He was super responsive when we had questions and followed up appropriately when necessary. He was so helpful to us as well when we had to consider end of life care. His compassion and his expertise made the decisions so much easier to make. Dr. Chen is very much appreciated!

We found Dr Chen when we moved my father to a new residence. Dr Chen always takes time with my father, treating him with respect and compassion while he asks him questions and examines him. While my father's dementia worsens, Dr Chen continues to care for him with the same respect, always formally addressing him, etc. He's been attentive to his medical needs and always calls me after he sees my father. He asks my opinion and includes me in his care recommendations. He's honest, direct and always answers all of my questions. We're glad we found Dr Chen for my father's last years.

Dr. Shawn Chen epitomizes the best that an internist can bring to the table. He is not only impeccably trained, but he has an accessiblilty not common for doctors. I felt as if my mother had a “concierge” doctor with a true commitment to her best care, comfort and happiness. Dr. Chen is an excellent communicator who I give my highest praise.

One of the VERY BEST primary care doctors in this area!Dr. Chen has been the primary care doctor for at least two years for my mother in law. He is an excellent listener and suggests what are the best options for her in her current condition. He visits her regularly as well as when requested and communicates with us, to make sure that we are all on the same page. Dr. Chen coordinates with all of her many specialists and is the sole point of contact for anything related to her care. He is a kind, compassionate and caring person, in addition to his well-rounded medical expertise. I highly recommend him to seniors who want to find a very experienced geriatric health care physician who genuinely cares about his patents.
