Missed the forest for the trees
I wish Dr Banik had referred me to a neurologist instead of only focusing on my eyes; a major diagnosis was missed as a result. In late 2013, I had optic neuritis and referred to Dr. Banik, seeing her from early 2014 to ~2016 through Mt Sinai’s Eye and Ear Infirmary. She never referred me to or suggested I see a neurologist for broader monitoring, beyond eyes, despite optic neuritis often being a sign for multiple sclerosis (MS). Her written evaluation of my MRI from 2013 stated that it showed nonspecific changes, “not classic for MS.” Fast forward 10 years, and I am diagnosed with MS only because my new neuro-ophthalmologist insisted that I routinely see a neurologist, showing humility and concern. A neurologist reviewed my case — and my 2013 MRI — and diagnosed MS. My understanding from Dr Banik’s care was that an annual eye exam was enough. As I now know, earlier MS diagnosis could have led to earlier treatment.

Thorough but unpleasantly arrogant. Dislikes explaining - will say it's just a note for doctors. Sometimes she strolls in an hour late w/ no apology. During Covid, wouldn't let patients use bathroom. Has issues w/ her assistants, has a new one each year so very difficult to get insurance paperwork or records: the average followup is 10 email requests. Tries to sell patients "medical vitamins": but we are more educated that that, Dr. Banik!

I can't say enough about Dr. Banik. She's been my Neuro-Ophthalmologist for four and half years now, having diagnosed me with Ocular Myasthenia Gravis. She is extraordinarily knowledgeable and invariably respectful and understanding. I would recommend her to anyone.
