Dr. Richard Kim, MD

Dr. Kim has helped me with my depression and anxiety throughout the years. I'm now in a better place than I have ever been. It took a while to find the right meds and the right therapist but everything is working out well now. I have had some medical problems and Dr. Kim took the time to find me referrals to specialists. I can't speak for the others who have posted on here but Dr. Kim has been very helpful to me.

I reached out to Dr. Kim because of his promising bio on Psychology Today. I was specifically looking for someone experienced with a particular diagnosis to work with my young adult child. However, when he called back to discuss the case, he sounded disinterested throughout the entire conversation. His reluctance was obvious, and when I pointed out the hesitation in his voice, he bluntly admitted, 'Yeah, I don't have time - you should find someone else.' Is my kid's case challenging? Yes. But is it so challenging that someone claiming expertise in the diagnosis can't handle it? Absolutely not. The bottom line is, Dr. Kim lacks the care and compassion you would expect from a professional in psychiatry. He left me feeling completely disheartened. I'm thankful he showed his true self before we entered into a therapeutic relationship with him. It saved us from what could have been a frustrating and unproductive experience.

Dr Kim lied to my husband about tapering our daughter off 2 psych meds she was wrongly prescribed by her GP. Instead he put her on 2 more, a total of 4, which changed her into her opposite. This means out daughter no longer Exists, which is horrific.

Dr. Kim just did a psych evaluation with me. He is caring and insightful. He asks good questions. I will return to him if I need to.

I recently married my husband and so I wanted to speak to Dr. Kim about his treatment. I came in and he asked me why I decided to come in and I said well my husband is fine and I haven't noticed anything alarming. We spoke and we would like to start tapering off because we have a baby on the way. He said he does not believe in tapering off drugs and so he would recommend another Dr, I found that very interesting since his patient wanted to be off the drugs. I very highly recommend Dr. Kim. He was very thorough in educating me as to what was going on & the options that were available to me. We worked closely together to find the right medications and dosing and I have been doing great on these ever since. After he left Inova I had some negative experiences there and decided to search out Dr. Kim. His knowlege, expertise and professionalism make it worth it for me to go outside of my insurance. He is easy to talk to & has an excellent bedside manner.

I am very satisfied with my experience with Dr. Kim. He is very thorough and objective in his practice, but in a way that relays that he cares about his patients' well-being in addition to gathering evidence to offer the best care. I thoroughly appreciate his availability to talk on the phone when needing care prior to my next appointment. There have been a few slight hiccups in the bookkeeping end of things during my time with him, but they are nominal when looking at the overall care provided.

I met Dr. Kim at INOVA health system. Then I chose to continue my treatment with him when he opened his own private practice. Dr. Kim is very caring and attuned to his patients. He has excellent listening skills and has effectively applied his knowledge and therapeutic skills to helping me get better with my anxiety and depression. He has even reached out in-between scheduled appointments to check on my progress. I recommend him highly.

I am so grateful to have found and consulted with Dr. Kim. He is compassionate, non-judgmental, and thorough in his assessment and care. I really appreciate his holistic approach to mental health, which includes spirituality, physical health, mindfulness, medication (if necessary), and talk therapy. Between our visits, his communication with my therapist, and choice of medication, I have learned to manage my anxiety and insomnia in a way that allows me to live a full and active lifestyle.

I consulted with 2 other psychiatrists before meeting Dr. Kim. While both doctors are highly qualified, one went by the book too much, the other was detached in his mannerism. Dr. Kim was warm and empathetic. Following the initial consultation, he contacted my psychotherapist in order to better understand my history. In subsequent visits, he demonstrated knowledge, patience, and willingness to listen every time. I did not feel that I had to rush during my visits, and will recommend him highly.

Exceptional. Did thorough research and looked at back history before prescribing. With his help, I am feeling a hell of a lot better than I was prior to becoming a patient.

I would recommend Dr. Kim b/c he takes the time to assess& listen to the patients needs. I am very weary about doctors who treat mental illness with just medications. He has worked with my family over the past year and has worked tirelessly in getting my wife on the road to recovery.
