Take the negative reviews seriously
This doctor makes a good first impression, but over time, you will have issues that result in risks to you and your family's health. My experience included costly, ineffective tests that delayed treatment, unsubstantiated diagnoses, and absurd recommendations (like taking laxatives, smoking marijuana and watching Netflix series to cure non-existent issues). Even his peers at Scripps have since questioned his judgment, which is rare to see. I have never had any issues with any health care providers in 50 years. Take the negative reviews seriously.

Talkative & rushed - Inaccurate Medical Recording
I have had my own doctor (board certified internist) in Hemet for over 20 years (I am mid-50's). When I moved to Encinitas in 2017, I decided to see Dr. Sexton for the 'minor stuff' such as a cold. I found that Sexton was excessively talkative and seemed distracted in my visits. Sexton also seemed to hold the opinion that 'the mind' was responsible for many health issues. In addition, even though I had my own doctor, Sexton kept pushing to take over my medications that my doctor of 20 years had been treating me with. Foolishly, I agreed. When Sexton, whom is significantly younger than my doctor, changed my diagnosis' & medications, I quickly returned to my own doctor (whom was upset with Sexton's treatment). Now, in 2023, I am able to see Sexton's 'notes' from 2019 -- I am SHOCKED at the diagnosis he gave me, and more troubled by the fact that HE LISTED MEDICATIONS THAT I HAD NEVER TAKEN...AND OTHER MEDICATIONS LISTED WITH THE WRONG DOSAGE. I trust an older doctor.

Friendly face on dangerous practices
We like Dr. Sexton; he's friendly and runs a tidy practice. However, he is dangerous. He made multiple, serious errors in my drug prescriptions, the last of which landed me in the hospital for a month. Over the last year and a half he prescribed several medications that either should not be prescribed for people with my conditions or, worse, have well-known interactions with my primary medications. As my PCP, it was his responsibility to check for contraindications, so now reviewing the medications he prescribed it is shocking to see the bold warnings that are easily available with a simple search. A few of his errors have made other doctors gasp. I am filing formal complaints with my insurance company and the Medical Board of California, with the hopes that other people will not have to go through what I went through.

Former Unhappy Patient
I was with Dr. Perry for a couple of years. I had certain ailments that were not being addressed properly because Dr. Perry did not look at the root cause. He is more prone to prescribing medication to treat a condition. I visited a functional medical doctor after years of not being happy with his prognosis. Dr. Perry was unwilling to partner with another doctor or add on various tests to my lab work. He stated "having more data is not necessarily valuable." I switched my primary care doctor, and I am much happier. My doctor now is more open minded and willing to help find a root cause instead of just treating symptoms.

I am one of the patients who gives Dr, Sexton 5 stars. As others say, he is extremely empathetic. While sitting in the waiting room, I have noticed that he follows his patients back to the front desk and makes sure they have the paperwork filled out properly, and to answer their last minute questions. He does not hide behind formality. I respect his character and medical experience absolutely.

I would strongly NOT recommend Dr. Sexton. My initial "meet and greet" entailed 45 minutes of him pontificating on the Covid Vaccine. I could handle that, but when he started politicizing the vaccine and candidates and even news outlets, I was done. That was my first and last appointment with that guy!

After I moved from Carlsbad to San Diego I initially left Dr Sexton as a patient with hopes I would be able to find a doctor as great as him in San Diego. After 2 years and 3 different doctors, it was an easy decision for me to return to Dr. Sexton, even if it means I have 30 miles drive now to see him. His "bedside" manners are outstanding, I always feel cared about and listened to, never rushed. More often than not he comes up with solution that do not involve medications, but rather solutions like, posture, shoe inlays, personal training, etc. So far we have found a solution to any of my medical issues.

I had the same experience as the reviewer who said he pushes pills til you’re dependent then denies refills. Interesting that he is also is in the business of treating addiction at other facilities. He violated my confidentiality and lied about me to another patient! Incredibly unprofessional.

If you're thinking of going to Dr. Sexton I encourage you to read all of the bad reviews online first. He was my doctor for many years and I refused to believe the horror stories until recently. There are numerous allegations of patient confidentiality being breached, gaslighting, pushing pills and then refusing refills once patients become desperate, or, in my case, neglecting to communicate very grave medical test results. He has cultivated a creepy cult-like atmosphere and his office staff act like callous snobs whose only skill is running a credit card machine.

Dr Sexton misdiagnosed me. While he is a nice guy and very personable, it is unacceptable to misread results. AS to his front office staff; it is very common to be placed on hold upwards of 10 minutes or more...

Dr. Sexton is an incredible GP (I'm a senior and have had a number of GPs over my +7 decades). I rate his highest rate of competency, 'manners' and follow-up to be unequaled by the GPs I have trusted my health concerns to over a life time. His treatment practice my experience begins with the least invasive approach and follow-up's as necessary to treat my various conditions. I strongly recommend Dr Sexton's skills to friends, neighbors and family who require a GP health manager's assistance.

I was a patient for years until a neighbor (I suspect) enticed his office to give her my medical records which were spread throughout the community in a smear campaign she was waging on behalf of persons trying to extort a trust from me. A witness told me, and I confirmed my records were indeed accessed by his office by going to the local hospital to confirm. When I complained, I was overbilled and harassed by his staff. Horrible person, horrible staff, horrible "professional."

Dr. Sexton refused to prescribe antibiotics for my wife when she had severe bronchitis. Thousands in unnecessary testing later, the tests proved she did not have allergies or asthma as Sexton insisted. Six months of unnecessary testing and useless treatments a pulmonologist at Scripps said she couldn't believe any doctor would not prescribe antibiotics for an obvious case of bronchitis. Now her lungs have been permanently damaged by the untreated infection. I will be suing for malpractice.

Dr. Sexton, takes more time with a patient than I have ever seen. He explains all that he is doing very well and then leaves you with a type written copy of what he talked to you about. He is empathetic understanding and thorough.

He is incredibly patient and understanding to patients regardless of whatever their concerns or health issues may pertain. He and his staff all carry an excellent bedside manner and genuinely care for their patients' recovery and needs. His knowledge regarding all aspects of psychiatry and general health are formulated in a way that is efficiently reciprocated to his patients in a way that's easily understandable, regardless of their previous experiences in various healthcare.
