Rude Dr - and I question his medical abilities
I saw Dr Prater in the ER on 12/31. I was the only pt there at the time. I had been to urgent care at KU earlier in the day and received antibiotics, but when pain began to spread and worsen, I returned to urgent care. My provider suggested I go to ER because she was concerned about my kidneys and sepsis. We should have driven to KU, but Prairie Star was closer … The nurse (Laura) was fantastic. She was compassionate and moved quickly to help make me comfortable. But when Dr Prater came in and heard the history up to that point, he asked in a condescending tone, “what do YOU think is wrong.” He went to the white board and started talking to it and writing what would be done … pain meds, anti nausea, CT, etc. He didn’t speak to me or my husband but spoke only to the board and left the room. In the end, he gave me a diff antibiotic. I asked if I should stop take the one I already had. His response: “if you want to.” Don’t waste your time here!

Very Rude
He kept asking me what I thought was wrong with me. I would say something and he would say no that is not it. Then I finally asked what do you think it is and he said ... I don't know. I asked him to run tests or something and he said for what. My leg hurt and I could barely walk . He said he could get me crutches or a walker. Just extremely rude.

I was seen by Dr. Prater for stroke like symptoms in the ER last night. He started the visit by mocking my efforts to protect myself from COVID exposure in the ER. I wore my protective eyewear (an OSHA standard for healthcare workers to limit potential exposure). He asked if I was a chemist or something and began making jokes about my goggles. He told me I likely had a stroke but would need to follow up with my PCP in the morning for a brain MRI. He also told me I could have a brain tumor right before going into CT (which was normal). At the end of the visit he informed me I could have MS. I am highly concerned with my experience to say the least.

Terrible bedside manner and the rudest medical professional I’ve ever had the displeasure of meeting. For this person to be employed to help others in their direst moments of need is unbelievable. He had little interest in resolving the issues our family doctor sent us to the ER for and instead wanted to chastise and criticize the patient. Caused the patient to cry and feel very uncomfortable in his presence. Never felt that he was listening but was just waiting to drive his point home. The other staff was amazing and very helpful. The Patient does not think he should be left alone on the room without other staff.

Mr. Prater was arrogant, curt and not comforting in any way. His delivery of information was horrible! He tried to diagnose my daughter with MS and repeated the diagnosis over and over with inconclusive evidence. Did not comfort my frightened daughter or me. He should not be a practicing physician as I don’t believe he has the skills to help people with medical needs. Needless to say we went to KU for a second opinion and $1000s of dollars later they confirmed that my daughter was perfectly healthy. Run away from any facility where he may be practicing. Also, I’d give zero stars in this rating if I could!

Took my mother to ER at Advent Heath. Formerly Shawnee Mission Medical Center. I thought she was having a stroke. Dr. Prater immediately recognized it as Bell's Palsy and prescribed treatment. I thought he was great. Highly satisfied with diagnosis and prescribed treatment. Increased my mother's odds of better recovery. I've read that a good percentage of Bell's Palsy patients are not given proper treatment. Prednisone + Antiviral. Anyway I read these poor reviews and was shocked to see it didn't match our experience whatsoever.

I was seen in the ER last night by this “Man” who accused me of being a drug seeker. I was told by my dentist to go to the ER because the antibiotics she gave me weren’t working fast enough and the tooth infection I had was possibly spreading to my sinuses. I wasn’t even there for the pain. I was there because I don’t want to die of sepsis. Mr. Michael Prater (won’t call him doctor he doesn’t deserve the title) treated me like I was less than human over a bottle of antibiotics.

I have had the displeasure of dealing with Dr. Prater 3 times, once for a traumatic injury to my hand, another for a kidney stone, and now for my wife took our teen daughter in experiencing severe abdominal pains, possible mono and strep. On all occasions he was the most flippantly arrogant, egotistical, narcissistic doctor that he could be. The rest of the staff from nurses to radiology constantly have to be apologetic for his attitude. Tonight's experience is prompting me to involve SMMC admin

Worst physician I have ever encountered . Rude , arrogant , belittled me as a patient . Can't believe Shawnee Mission would allow him in their wonderful facility. This guy should not be involved with patients and will seek another emergency room if I ever need one . Avoid him at all costs! If I could get him no stars I would .

I do not recommend Prater at all. He showed no interest in finding out what was wrong and was completely unprofessional. He was very blunt and rude. Not someone to visit if you need serious medical attention. 0 out of 10 if possible. Short wait time but terrible medical staff. He talked in circles and did nothing to help.

He was a jerk to my mother-in-law because she was over cautious in bringing him to the ER. Took one look at my son, in the room for about 5 minutes, then billed me $675. Never go to Shawnee Mission Urgent care unless you are at the brink of death and can't wait the extra 5 minutes to go ANYWHERE else.

This doctor did absolutely nothing for me. My surgeon told me to go to the ER when I had complications after surgery. I went and Prater was the one on call. He came in, coughing everywhere and barely covering his mouth, and asked me what was wrong. After explaining everything he said "well let me wash my hands so I don't get you sick" (after he touched all of my prescription bottles. He then poked around on my stomach and wrote me a script that NO pharmacies cover and that costs $500. WORTHLESS!
